Wife is "babysitting" a pair of ten year olds (niece and nephew) in Philly over the weekend and into next week while their mother is going to a class.
So, what would be safe for them to do? Kids are NOT the best behaved and their interests rarely go further than video games. Wife likes Ballet, museums, historic tours, etc. Any volunteers to take her place (free of charge, of course) so she can go off and have fun ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OR How about ideas on things to do? Looking at science museum or trip to New York or DC, just something to entertain and not put them into a troubling/dangerous situation. Does not appear she can carry on this trip....

The Franklin has cool Imax movies. The kids are probably too old for the Please Touch museum.

Is Dave and Busters still open? The kids should like that.

Yep, heck of a way for us to go broke. Kids would love the games, Wife would strangle me. She hates video games.

Yeah, a tour of a real firehouse would be great for them.

There's a pretty decent aquarium across the bridge in Camden.... but it's in Camden. Sesame Place isn't too far away in Langhorne. I used to love going to Philly when I was a kid, but as I get older, I can't remember why. It's much more fun for adults. Franklin Inst. was good when I was last there around 1982. Isn't there a mint there too? Pretty sure I went there on that trip too. Nothing wrong with a little history lesson for the kids by going to Valley Forge, Washington's Crossing or Independence Hall. I still don't know why the Liberty Bell is famous.

Send the Wife to see Sniper so she could teach him how to shoot? Naaahhhh, waste of time! Kids already have their father to look down on......guess who I do not get along with?
So, Franklin Institute/Museum looks interesting! Wife is happy, kids not so much. I feel for her next week. Kids are NOT interested in Sesame Place, they think Sesame Street is for "tards", yeah, great kids. The aquarium sounds like fun!!! SOOOOO Wife is trying to get them interested in Rodin but I'm worried about the graphic stuff represented there. We enjoyed it when we went. There is also the museum. She is also finding more about the arboretum! Her MAC is twice as fast as this Toshiba, same age, same processors, same RAM, etc. Operating system differences. My new Dell Latitude comes in in two more days. Life will be better. Pray for Wife!!!

I grew up in Philly and some of the best memories I have of that sewer are from The Franklin Institute.

Thanks guys! Keep 'em coming! She will have a week lined out this way! Phillies game, never thought of that!
I wanted to do the haunted tour but we ran out of time when there. Yep, Philly ain't the best/safest place on earth but there are worse! Kids need LOTS of supervision so Wife WILL have her hands full. Wonder if the Franklin Institute might be good for two seperate visits?

entertaining the idea

I will be up in Connecticut this weekend visiting family, or I would gladly show you guys around.
Next to the Franklin Institute is the Art Museum. They do have some cool exhibits that the kids will enjoy (suits of armor and weapons). You can let them run up the steps a few times ala Rocky. Behind the Art Museum there is Fairmount Park where you can rent bikes or roller blades. There is also the Academy of Natural sciences that has fossils, dinosaurs, etc. The Mutter Museum that has all kinds of medical oddities. There is all kinds of historical tours and the like in Old City. Just throwing some ideas out there. Have fun. |

I did a installation at the Franklin, great place but be prepared to get lost in the building (I mean that in a good way).
We did the aquarium and it was also a lot of fun, on the Philly side of the river there is a maritime museum (prob a yawner for the kids) but they have a boat that ferries you over to the aquarium (more fun than driving over the bridge) and they had some food carts on the dock (had my first funnel cake there). It might be good (maybe not "fun") to make a quick stop at Independence hall and see the bell. You wife might like the Rodin museum... kids... not so much (but lots of naked ladies!) Edit, see you have already looked into that

I was there briefly once and really enjoyed walking around the historical neighborhoods with the 18th century row houses near downtown. I did not see the seedy part of town, FWIW.

Across the river is BB New Jersey. It is the same class as BB Missouri which appears in the Battleship film. If they have seen the film they might like it. I regret not visiting it last time I was in Philadelphia (did the Rocky steps and the historical district, though)
