tell Crimper Girl to back off - I am wielding a pair of Dykes!
yes, the Westy is a PIA - hence my recent stmt. that VW is a German brand but it is the CHEAPEST German brand with the worst effin' engineers - the Bus was a lot simpler & easier to work on (once I got rid of the stoopid azz Solex carns on it) Napa here does not have clamps that will fit |
oh yeh - wish mine had A/C - it doesn't and it is spendy to add it in. That is gonna limit my desert trips some
I waited over a decade for VW to put out their "New Bus" - they planned to, but guess who ran them out of MONEY??? Yup. The same guy who won all those races for Porsche, running them out of money in the meantime. The Nephew. |
My brother has a 1972 Camper he bought in 1974 for $1,800. The other day he was getting gas and some guy offered him 11 grand for it. He turned the guy down because ha can't replace it for that.

yeah here we are dealing with the 88 westy and now the 86.
and both of them will kick my 911's azz for resale in 2012! WTF am i missing here? yeah the a/c on the 88 was factory. no a/c on the 86 and i am afeared as hell at what kind of HVAC eng. we will have to do aside from redesign the wheel. plus the 86 is the smaller motor 1.9. we have a test area with a hell of a grade...............for miles and miles. the worst grade in the state is I-17N black canyon. ours is a close 3rd behind it. with the a/c on we cant even pull the hill barely with the 2.1 liter. shut the a/c off, and yer back to about 40-45mph MAX 3rd gear! 2 people full of fuel no nothing else. so adding a/c to the 1.9 liter................well its gonna be interesting. |
you must own a middie 911 (?)
my 2wd Westy (2.1L) is worth a solid $10,000 - a Syncro is worth a LOT more - maybe $40,000 or a bit more the '85's were the last year with the 1.9L motor Don't believe the GW prices represent the real market for these things. But they ARE a cult vehicle. Dunno if you saw my thread, but I got a friend to take a phone of pic of an old white Bus here in town. The cute blonde driving it may or may not know it but it appears to be a barn door. Pelicaneers estimated the value north of $50,000... |
What is a barn door on a van? The sliding door or two doors that open up? I have seen real barns with both. My brothers is the slider type.
|
The BMW dealer here stocks "fuel injection" clamps. Basically a Norma clamp in small sizes. I bought a bag full just because I could. IIRC, the MFI hoses are both 4 and 5 mm. I even scrounged a bunch back in the Ragamuffin days and had them replated.
Now they sit pretty in a "pretty bin." That's the vernacular for useless. |
crap my 911 is a 87 ragtop. i am only facing a :
complete a/c update(everything as zoomy as it gets) as its now gonna be 107F today and we can see some real temps out the vents. this is only about a week away from doing. and some lil door dinger scratches taken care of at amigos body shop. and I AM DONE! FINISHED! NO MAS NO MORE UPDATUMS GEFIXINS for a long damn time. its been a very long labor of love as every stinking GRUPPE and I MEAN EVERY STINKING GRUPPE from stem to stern has been addressed. down to the last stinking bushing/ bearing/nut bolt washer. the only thing i didnt do was split the case on the gawd daMN THING AS IT ONLY HAD 121k when we pulled motor and tranny. yes i am crazier than bat poo. and my bunghole HURTS because my wallet is mucho LIGHTER! but we saw a damn 89 4x4 pop top westy low miles all the zoommy crap on it, perfect paint body zero rust not a rock dinger anywhere and he was asking FREEKING $54,000 peso dollares USD! we about keeled OVER! and poo'd ourselves silly. for a freeking vanagon???? yeah cult vehicle no doubt. and a hell of alot of werk to make them RIGHT. and parts are............well you know that already, are a PITA! i think we got the very last known to mankind digital clock for the westy 4x4 we found going thru our local north snobbsdale az VW u.s. dealer search. when somebody says to us the most moronic statement of the century "WELL ITS ONLY A VW", we generally want to tear them LIMB FROM LIMB in a very slow manner. because its a GIANT 911 with even longer a/c lines and to top it off................its a gawd damn wasserboxer 911 to beat you into submission and break yer wallet and generally have its way with you until the fat lady sings. we got a ton of moola into this . i mean a ton. just painted it original burgandy/champagne er whatever the krauts call it. we are afeared of calculating all the receipts. but the one thing we didnt blink an eye on was the wasser(water) hoses all new clamps fittings water pump starter alternator gasketsetc etc etc etc while yer in ders. etc. when ya end up getting all the wasser(H2O) back in it, wait til ya have to bleed all the freeking air out of the system! jack vanagon up at front. way high with blocks. then make yerself a lil hose that fits into bleeder on side of radiator to pour water in. then jack up vehicle at rear. fire engine. then let run for a bit. let down off jack and check coolant level again. if not enough, then jack front up again and repeat adding water in. use the aluminum friendly antifreeze 50/50% with DISTILLED WATER/H20/WASSER! it will take awhile to do this. there will be a hell of alot of air introduced to entire system when taking all apart. you sure as hell dont want to even try this on side of road when something craps out. was it worth it all? hell yes! you ought to see the crowd this damn westy gathers now, when buzzing around. and it buzzes along pretty nice except..........HILLS! |

for the air bleed there is a thing called a Libby Bong - may work on other things also...
I did not follow the causal linkage between your bunghole and your wallet -- did you buy a wallet made of carbon fiber?? VW parts a lot cheaper than 911 parts - and they should be too! |
gowesty and van cafe were sending us famous amos COOKIES with every order. they LOVED US and our credit card!
yeah some of the westy stuff was ok on price, but some floored us. same as a 911 or more! my bunghole puckered as well as my wallet had heart murmurs for quite sometime until the fat lady sung. the build started nice............and then turned ugly as we found more and more wrong bad evil things to make us break down. when i get home i'll blast some more build pics. going down to tucson in a coupla weeks and gonna search for some there in the junkyards. |
I'd like to see the pics!
Have you seen the Slow Going thread? |
I'm gonna ask a question that gets to the core (I too dislike the hose digging by worm hose clamps): will we get leaks if we don't crank down so hard on the worm drive so it doesn't dig?
|
Sacrificial hose, cut up and wrapped around the hose you are actually trying to clamp, before the clamp is tightened down.
|
yeh -- or just use a decent clamp to begin with...
|
|
nice & clean!
I'd sure like to have a 6 cyl. Sube in mine... of course, I'd also like to have a Syncro, a/c,... I'd just like a modern 4wd camper - a small one... |
another thing we did was replace all plastic fittings with metal fittings. btwn ambient dezert heat and engine heat..............it always fails.
note the alum fuel rails instead of the crap oem fuel rails. |
^ That build has me intrigued. I think there is a lot of info to be gleaned for the DIYer.
