One of my neighbors still drives her Gen 1 Prius. I guess they can't be too bad.

I think the first Gen 1 also had an exhaust system that rusted. Fixed with stainless in Gen 2.
The Japanese term for incremental improvement towards perfection is Kaisen(I just rediscovered).

Toyota did not plan any major and obvious defective designs made to break prematurely and sell service. No hitching a ride to the dealership twice a year for another broken transmission or misfire. No getting stuck on the side of the highway while on vacation.
The initial markup and price was well worth the initial cost.

I been in a Prius taxi a few times....Impressive room in the back seat....Not my cup of tea, but gotta give credit to Toyota....

Hah! Rust? What's that? :D (I notice you are in the midwest).:)

I bought my Gen 2 (2004) after riding in a taxi Prius, and then on multiple trips, renting one from Enterprise.

I still have it, 121k, no problems whatsoever.

I've been in the back hatch of an SF Prius cab...

My friends were laughing so hard - The driver was really pushing it and on occasion they'd look back and see me floating in the air. Great night...

Huh? Where did you get that info about hybrid vehicle drivers? And you said that w/o a :)?

All cars have built in redundancy... Even RR and Bentley. I'd be surprised if the Prius didn't. If it doesn't kudos to Toyota.

Actually I read that some time ago and I think it came from a neutral, maybe, governmental source. I could not believe it myself but it seemed it originated from a serious source. But I cannot cite it right now. Sorry.

It all sounds pretty good for the Priuses. But I just don't like their looks and I can't stand the poor visibility out the back. For my taste the hybrid Honda Civics at least look like a real car, and you can see out the back!

We had a Lexus CT in the shop the other day - I was surprised. Drove great - good looking car - decent interior space - great finishes inside and out - really solid car - I am seriously thinking of it as a daily, once it moves to the used market.
