Michael Schumacher ranked second wealthiest sportsman in the world

Sportsmen – whether you'd classify them all as athletes or not – are some of the wealthiest people in the world. And every year, The Sunday Times puts out a list of the richest among them. The list takes all their assets into account – including salaries past and present, endorsements and other investments – and ranks them by their net worth. So who comes out on top?

Golfers, if you can believe it. Tiger Woods tops the Top 20 list worldwide at £538 million (~$870M), joined by Arnold Palmer at No. 4 with £230M ($370M), Greg Norman at No. 9 with £174M ($280M) and Jack Niclaus at No. 11 with £158M ($255M). But just behind them are the racing drivers.

Michael Schumacher just trails Tiger with £510 million ($824M), making him the second richest sportsman in the world, by far the wealthiest racer, and within reach of becoming the first billionaire driver in the world. Little wonder, as he's the most decorated driver the world has ever known.

Also on the list are Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, who tie for eighteenth place (together with baseball's CC Sabathia) at £100 million ($160M) apiece. But in between these Formula One drivers sits one Dale Earnhardt, arguably the biggest name in NASCAR, who ties basketball star Kobe Bryant at sixth place with £185 million ($300M) in assets.

Now if only someone paid us that much to drive around in circles, well...we'd still probably be blogging about cars, only we'd be doing it from onboard our own mega-yachts somewhere a lot more glamorous.
Now that's funny right thar ...... Tiger #1 and Schumi #2, and they're both winning about as often nowadays.

Sebastien Loeb is underpaid by that logic.

onewhippedpuppy 05-15-2012 11:25 AM

Being a has-been pays pretty well, huh?:D

sammyg2 05-15-2012 11:36 AM

LOL, evidently.
But you can't be a has-been if you never was.

URY914 05-15-2012 12:43 PM

I remember seeing a pic of Schumi's house under construction. He had three tower cranes working on it.

Earnhardt Jr. has never won a championship and is way behind in total wins. He never was. If his name was Dale Smith, he'd be on the bench.

Where do entertainers stand, like Paul McCartney?

Schumacher homes

Quick search shows Mike likes islands and Swiss retreats!:eek::eek:

Modest home in Gland Switzerland
(The home URY914 mentioned had 3 cranes during construction)

And who doesn't have a "world champion tower"?

In all seriousness, good for him, the guy worked for it!

Geeze- I'm still waiting for Machining to become a sport !

Makes me angry and confused that games people play can be so profitable.

porsche4life 05-15-2012 06:07 PM

The games are what made them famous, the sponsorship $$ is what made them uber rich....

He may have been born into talent, but he wasn't born into F1. Just like any pro athlete, it takes both talent and hard work to get there.

Two things here.

Right or wrong, the top tier F1 drivers make many millions a year. This includes drivers like Rosberg and Massa. It is what it is; F1 bleeds money. Product sponsorship brings in more megamillions. Corporations want sportsmen and athletes that have been successful.

Schumacher, through force of will, was instrumental in re-establishing Ferrari as a top-tier team. When he joined up, they were awful. Everything about the F1 team was in disarray. He worked harder and tested more than any driver on the circuit. He's loaded with talent, but he was also smart. He worked his ass off year round to maintain his edge. He's won more championships than a lot of drivers have won races.

Does anyone deserve that kind of dough for winning races? Not for me to decide, but IMHO, he deserves to be at or near the top of the heap in wealth compared to other sportsmen/athletes.

(I am not a rabid fanboy, but I did admire his skill (and enthusiasm) when he was in his prime. He celebrated his 92nd win just as joyously as he did his first, I always like how excited he was on the podium)

speeder 05-16-2012 08:34 AM

I have no problem with the guy's income but good god that's an ugly POS house. Money still doesn't buy taste.

Plus 1. Plus 10000. Plus 10001

What is that phallus doing there? All it needs is a couple of round shrubberies at the base to complete the effect!

Ah, the landscaping just isn't mature yet.

Seriously, which one?

Agreed, most of what he has was probably from daddy's estate. Still belongs to him tho.

You might be right, but I'm pretty sure thats money he's made himself. He's a sponsor's delight, and sponsor money counts in this runup.

He's the Nico Rosberg of Nascar. Huge potential, popular, wins very little.

450knotOffice 05-16-2012 09:14 PM

Apparently you guys have never seen a French Chateau or a Swiss church? His house is a modern rendition of both. It works in Europe.

(But we Americans know EVERYTHING about taste and style, right? Right.)
