Solar Eclipse in California: Is Anybody going to See the Full Eclipse on Sunday?
Is anybody planning to see the full solar eclipse in California? Somewhere between Reno and Las Vegas?
|
I'm in San Diego and (being an intelligent human) plan NOT to watch the thing. For some reason, I value sight. . .
|
I'm in!!! We've got welding helmets. That'll work!

My hometown, Redding, is in the path of the fullest coverage. It trails off to the north and south. The local paper as had a few articles about it. One on the 9th that I missed but found online that describes the trajectory, vaugely. I went to other sources online. The LA times has better stuff with graphics. It starts in Japan and crosses the Pacific making 'landfall' on the California coast about 6:15 near Crescent City traveling Southeast across Redding, Chico, Reno etc. As it gets later it is lower in the sky such that sun will set about the time the maximally covered sun gets to Arizona/NM. Most of the West will see the dent the moon makes.

So What! It is still happening here. Last was 18 years ago - for the entire nation. Only a small area of the country is this lucky and the paper just reports on the weather for this mornings rodeo parade. Cloudy weather tomorrow would be a horrible thing! I'm betting a lot of visitors to the area just to see this. Hopefully no one will injure their retinas permanently. I've been cutting up used, darkened xray film to use for filters. Projecting using a pinhole or binocular works too. Let all your friends know to prepare for a dinnertime spectacle - 5:11- 7:36 PDT Maximum at 6:28 PDT THis is the data for Whiskeytown Lake - Site of a viewing party. |

Come out to Thunderhill today. We are near the center of the eclipse and our race is at 4:30 this afternoon. Watch the race and then the eclipse! NASA might charge you 10 bucks to get in, although by Sunday afternoon they are pretty lax on collecting.

That probably whats wrong with the left coast loonies: staring into the sun too long.
|
We were able to see about 1/3 coverage before it went below the horizon.
|
Just got back from a nearby mountain - found a great place to watch the show!
The welding helmet was the ticket! I was surprised that we (in southern Oregon) got the full "ring of fire" annular eclipse instead of the "c" shaped one. I thought I'd need to be further south to get the whole effect. Very cool to watch. angela |
No "ring of fire" for us... :(

Auto-dark?

I had a pair of old-school welding goggles, and the #9 lense fit perfectly between my camera lens and polarizing filter, although I got some weird refraction because the lens isn't perfectly flat.
|
Could use it for a Star Wars movie. 3 suns, 3 moons. All being eclipsed at once. And the air is green. Call it Planet Claire. :)
|
I wonder how many people bought welding helmets today only to return them tomorrow.
