Yesterday I watched "180* South" (180 Degrees South) on Netflix - a guy is inspired by a film some surfers made as they travelled to the southern tip of South America. It was a life changing journey them, and became one for him as well.

Inocente - just won the Oscar for best documentary short film.
Can view it online at MTV.com (no, it's not Real World or Teen Mom): Inocente | MTV It's about an artist who is a 15 year old homeless girl in San Diego. |
Dogtown and Z-boys about the dogtown skaters--Alva, Peralta, Adams, etc.
Riding Giants--about big wave surfing The Art of the Steal--about how the Barnes Trust and foundation was screwed out of its art collection The King of Kong--about competitive video gamers Hearts of Darkness--a documentary filmed by Coppola's wife during the filming of "Apocalypse Now" |

Queen of Versailles +1 Excellent film about the 1%'ers...."Mommie! Why are all these other people on the airplane?" (Kid had always flown in private jets, first time on a commercial flight) :-)
Anvil! The Story of Anvil +1 Was hooked in the first 45 seconds. Great for any music fan. Shipbreakers (laborers in India who dismantle old ships...no rules, regulations...makes China's factories look like paradise). |
Anvil was pretty great, almost like a real life Spinal Tap lol
This one I didn't see posted yet Narrated/hosted by Patrick Stewart about Stirling Moss watched it on Jalopnik I thought it was awesome! Watch Sir Patrick Stewart |
Whore's Glory on netflix
|
Surprised no one mentioned Lime Rock Park: The Secret Valley of Racing. Great independant documentary about the history of Lime Rock. It really captures the magic of LRP.
More info here: Chris Szwedo Productions I invited Chris Szwedo to show his "Gullwing at Twilight" documentary at my PCA region's monthly meeting a few years back. Great down to earth guy - very passionate about his work, and a great artist as well. |
and now for something totally different.
Against the Tide: The Story of the Acadian People It wouldn't mean anything to most of you guys but if you might be interested in learning a little about the sad history of the early cajun people and all the tragedy and hardship they endured first at the hands of the french govt. then the british govt, the Spanish govt, French govt again the finally the US govt. before making a life in the swamp lands of Louisiana where no one else wanted to live. meaningless to you guys I'm sure but with a family history in louisiana going back to the mid1700's it choked me up bit. and you get to listen to some good cajun music too |

I don't know if anyone already mentioned "Something Ventured" about the origin of Silicon Valley, and the venture capital firms that helped to fund the tech companies. Includes members of Intel, and Steve Wozniak.

Highly recommend "Which way is the front line from here" about photojournalist Tim Hetherington. Covers his life & work and the wars he'd covered, really amazing and I knew nothing about him.

Manda Bala.
Doc about corrupt Brazilian politicians, bulletproofing cars, and a plastic surgeon who´s a master at reconstructing severed ears. I have yet to meet a Brazilian who has seen it. Wasteland Shows the happier side of Brazil. |
Saw a great documentary about this British middle aged man. Can't remember the name of the doc. He goes over to Thailand with all his money. Meets Thai girl, they settle down. They buy a farm, Lots of sex. She works hard. He does nothing but laze around and drink beer. She tires of him and boots him out. He goes back to the Uk penniless. She carries happily on.....:) Beware!

Note by Note - Steinway and Sons make concert grand pianos pretty much the same way they did 100 years ago. If you're into craftsmanship I think you would really like this. My only critique is I wish they had gotten deeper into explaining the work they do in detail, but still really good. Available on Netflix.
