All your anonymity are belong to us

Introduced by New York State Sen. Thomas F. O'Mara (R—Big Flats), S6779 would require that any anonymous post online is subject to removal if the poster refuses to post — and verify — their legal name, their IP address, and their home address.

Some of the poorest thinkers somehow get elected to office. True justice here would be to discover something O'Mara did anonymously. Hmm, I wonder if he's Catholic.

Better slip your ID into the confessional, sucker, so your sins can be posted for all to see.

"Some of the poorest thinkers somehow get elected to office"

Hmmm....

I thought that was a prerequisite.

There goes the internet....

And THIS- "Some of the poorest thinkers somehow get elected to office. True justice here would be to discover something O'Mara did anonymously."

CAn we all just vote AGAINST any incumbent this year!

Isn't

'any anonymous post subject to removal'

the way it is now? The owner of the website/forum/whatever has the discretion to do whatever they like.

Seems likely to me that Rep. O'Mara doesn't even own a computer and/or know what an 'anonymous post' even is.

I predict people will be very surprised at just how many people are named Mike Hunt.

sammyg2 05-24-2012 04:01 PM

Or Heywood Jablome.

Gretch 05-24-2012 04:08 PM

Or Richard Head

Hawkeye's-911T 05-24-2012 04:11 PM

Or Ivan Kutchakokoff

I'm just glad that our government has solved all of our more pressing problems, so they can focus on the plague of people posting anonymously online.

At this time, the website owner has the ability, but not the obligation, to remove said posts. I think this representative wants to make it mandatory.

That, or he has a problem with sites like 4chan, where people are free to post anything about anything or anyone.

And I agree with the other posts here - this guy's computer knowledge seems to be lacking.

A few years back, Plato had some thoughts about people like O'Mara:

"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors"

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something"
