Why are dogs / puppy stupid expensive these days?

Sadly I had to put down my 15 year old dog a couple weeks ago, tough call but she'd stopped eating, even ribeye steak, bacon, and dozens of different dog foods.

So looking for dog, I feel its insane to pay breeders $800-3000 for dogs, what is this bullsheet?

Rescue dogs are $185-450.

I don't see how people can justify stupid prices, when I remember FREE puppies in a cardboard box in front of a grocery store umpteen decades ago..........

Whats the most you've paid for dog?

Here's Lizzy, miss her wagging thumping tail and smile .

RIP Lizzy
What a cute girl dog ! They really capture the heart. Even though we recently got a rescue pup, I miss my Tilly all the time.

I don't know the answer why.

I've owned many dogs in my life and never paid for one...all from friends or people the friends knew.
I wonder why the high prices also.

The rescue dogs are priced like they are because they've had all their vet work done, shots, spay or neuter, etc. That box of puppies? Likely no health care what so ever, and by the time you take them to your vet, you'll come back with a higher bill than the rescue was.

Our Foxhound was a rescue. I think she was $350 or so. Higher because she was only 6 months old. The rescue got her at 6 weeks, and she was fostered and trained and cared for in that 4 1/2 month time by some awesome folks.

The dope Teddy Bear on the other hand was the opposite end of easy. Got him from some back yard breeder 10 years ago, the wife still won't tell me how much she paid for him, then all the standard vet bills, he should have been totaled out years ago. He's 10 now. No more breeder dogs. All of ours from here forward will be rescues.

Lizzy liked to chase Quad Copters, I feed her dozens of the cheap $15 drones.

Exactly and if you adopt the dog I’m fostering, he comes with a $400 wheelchair!

I have no idea why dogs and the ownership of same has reached epic proportions. Market-will-bear, I suppose, and all that.

If you'd never told me that dog's name, I would have said Lizzy. That is the perfect name for that little face.

RIP, Lizzy. Go chase those rabbits.

Our newest pup Lilly is a rescue. She was $350 which included all her shots, worming, spaying, and travel from Texas to NY. Her 11 month old brother was a stray we rescued from the city shelter. He was only $50, everything included. He was a great deal. My recently departed girl dog Tilly was going to be over $400, but the nearby humane society gave me a veteran’s discount. So she was only $300. That was only 1.5 years ago.

Look for local dogs on Petfinder or adoptapet.

Those are where I found Boomer and Lilly.

I wonder how much a rescue cat is. The shelter won't even take them now. They don't euthanize cats unless they are abandoned and real sick or injured badly.

I was going to adopt a cat and by time I spoke with the folks doing this not connected with the shelter, their requirements were ridiculous. I walked and took the first cat offered by a private party.

Ive had a few dogs. All free mixed breeds that people just wanted to get rid of. I have one friend that insists on certain breeds and pays big. Another that has to have designer dogs and he pays bigger. No way I would pay more than shelter fees for a dog.

Our TerriPoo was half price from El Paso shelter back in 2013: $30

Then came the vet bill when he got Parvo a few weeks later. So we paid for him...

Some is probably regional. I know here in N Fla when we adopted our pup from the shelter 14 years ago it was $90, but that covered cost of spay/neuter, id chipping, and first shots, etc.

We just adopted two kittens a couple of weeks ago, again $90 per but it covers spay/neuter (in a few weeks), and a few rounds of shots and a vet visit or two

I know if you just get a kitten from the box at the Publix (and yeah, I've been the guy giving 'em away twice, didn't take long....) you'll spend about twice that locally for doign all the same stuff...

Yup. I could see exceptions for actual working dogs but otherwise who really cares if the fuzz butt has a fancy name and traceable lineage?

And to discourage them being used as bait dogs or wet nurses by shady breeders.
