When did .32ACP and .380ACP start to be considered "worthless"?

When did that happen? In the 1920's, I thought they generally used the Colt 1903 in .32 and .380ACP.

3 shots in center mass with a .380ACP I would not feel are worthless. I carry a Ruger LCP as a pocket pistol and I meet Macho men who say they only carry a 9mm or 45 but the left it at home because it was too heavy. I would not want to get into a shootout with a .380ACP, but I at least have it in my pocket as a option. I feel a .380ACP is a 10 foot gun not 30 yards.

Let me say, that "I" do not consider them worthless. But the general stuff out there is that you should carry 9mm or larger, and a large contingent that anything without a .4 in the beginning is worthless.

Again, I understand that these pistols were designed for personal protection about 100 years ago, and were designed lower power to simplify the design of the pistol. But some point people stopped carrying the .32 and the .380.

I do know the .45 was developed after the Philippines where the enemy was hopped up on drugs and the .38 revolvers didn't do it. And the .357 was developed because the .38 special wasn't enough at times.

Same time they decided carburetors were worthless. They still work as intended and work fine for what they were intended, there are just some better options available nowdays. A 1903 or 1908 isn't going to win any marksmanship awards but a lot of cases a shot doesn't have to be fired.

I would not want to get shot with anything more than a BB gun.

A lot of .380's make excellent CCW's. IMHO, an airweight S&W .38 is the ultimate. Fits in the palm of your hand, shrouded hammer and can't jam. The wife can put all 5 in the ten ring from far enough away to do the job. She is really a better rifle shot though.

1911 was good enough for Sgt York, it's good enough for me. Too big and heavy to stick in your pocket.

I am a wimp, I don't even want to be shot by a BB gun. I have a Model 27 Glock 40, it will fit into my back pocket, matter of fact I have gone places I shouldn't and remember I'm carrying.

Before the 38 Super was the 38 ACP built for the Colt 1900 and 1902 Military, Sporting and Pocket.
The 357 was develped in the mid 30's to penetrate car bodies. It was fav of the F..B..I...in what became the S&W Mdl 27 especially the 3.5 inch barreled ones.

next time out plinking with proper hunting license, in proper legal hunting area...........nail a BUNNY WABBIT and see what a .380 will do.


do it with a .22/.32

do it with 9mm/.38/.357/.44/.45


and see what the end result is:

hell just about every type of game in north america has been POACHED with a freeking .22. its the classic poaching round for a very long time. so whenever ya hear a round go off in the middle of BFE AT NIGHT..................its more than likely a freeking POS POACHER!


i think its illegal in ALL 50 states to shoot a firearm at night unless raccoon hunting with lights. and proper license etc.


if ya sit in a desk all day, well a big azzd ANYTHING aint nothing on yer side. start bouncing around in an active job.....................well they get real damn heavy fast.

LIGHTWEIGHT easy to carry/small...............dont even know its there when weather is cool out or cold. when the temps go up............HK4 .380/.32/.25/.22/WALTHER PPK/S/ smith model 60 snubbie .38 are my choices hands down because easy to conceal in summer dress here which is either golf shirt and shorts or t-shirt and shorts.

i can shoot a 9mm one hell of alot more accurate than any .45 period. my groups will be tighter and my rounds expended will be faster. thats a fact. im not a cop, i dont need a freeking mega .45 like my HK USP FULL SIZE BLUNDERBUSS! or even a full size 1911.

i thought seriously about the HK USP COMPACT 45 until i bought HK COMPACT TACTICAL .45 and ITS BIG for a compact.

now as i have mentioned here before one of our gurus ROB LEATHAM here (mr springfield ) who shoots a gazzilion rds a year uses a 9mm. and we asked him why one day????


his answer.................better tighter groups/ease of carry/more rds/less recoil. and in his job as mr springfield carpal tunnel IS REAL!


look at some of the older gunwriters(JOHN TAFFEN) who has been dealing with carpal tunnel for quite some time from a lifetime of big bore .44 and .45 shooting with mega hot rds. he did this for a living also. it comes with the job. yer wrists can ONLY HANDLE SO MUCH ABUSE!



so if yer gonna bet yer azz on yer .45...................ya better shoot it ALOT! and there spendy.


9mm wayyyyyyy cheaper and obvious less recoil with higher round count IF YA MISS! and WE ALL MISS SOMETIMES!


now if i was dealing with crack heads all damn day as a cop.....................YEPPER I WANT THE 1911 or HK USP FULL SIZE .45. i doubt many states allow their cops to carry .357 or .44 mag due to overpenetration issues with those calibers anymore and ya only get 6rds there.

.22/.25/.32/.380/9mm/.38/.40/.45 FOR BAD GUYS any are good if aimed correctly. in AZ........they dont want you to carry anything smaller than .38 or 9mm for CCW.its not a law, but they do suggest that.

.357/.44mag OR BIGGER IF YA DARE! try some buffalo bore .44mags and WATCH YER WRIST GET HAMMERED...................FOR CRITTERS! over penetration IS THE PROBLEM HERE on bad guys.

I recently added a .380 Taurus to my inventory. 9mm is a good all-around cartridge, but .380 is just fine for up-close personal defense. Ruger, Kel-Tec, and S&W all make decent (to varying degrees) .380 pistols as well.

Based on pictures in the media, it looks like a certain high-profile self-defense shooting in Florida involved a .380 pistol...

My mistake. Kel-Tec's little 9 does look an awful lot like a .380.

I used to own one. They used to make a .40 S&W (P-40) on the same platform, and then sold .357 Sig barrels for it. That was a hand full! Painful to shoot. At one time, I had all three.

Actually was a nice sized pocket pistol. The P3AT is just a little easier to carry and conceal.

I carry my PPK in .32 all the time with 2 extra mags, loaded with silver tips.
I'm don't feel under gunned at all.

The thought of getting shot with a small caliber pistol was a lot more intimidating before the invention of trauma centers and antibiotics.

Which is why, as you can see by my icon, I prefer a .45 :)

I like carrying my P3AT when it's all I have room for. Buffalo Bore .380 will put the hurt on any bipedal predator.

I really enjoy shooting .32 ACP. I have a FN 1910 that's a real pleasure for plinking. I have never carried a .32 ACP but I have a NAA Guardian in .32NAA which packs a wallop. It's just a .380 case necked down to .32, and launches that little pill with a whole lotta oomph. That one does carried under the right circumstances.

While I certainly prefer to carry a 1911 in .45ACP, sometimes that's not an option. However my preference is based more on comfort with the platform than anything else. A 1911 just fits my hand properly, and the single-action trigger works best for me.

A lot of people turn up their noses at things like .22LR, 5.7, .32, .380, 9mm...I would ask them if they want to hold your target for you at your next range session.

I carry a .32 (colt 1903 or the Walther) I also carry a .380 at times. I use ball rather than any fancy schmancy protection bullets. Just plain old ball. They work just fine. If you are still standing after 8 shots from any of those guns...well ......

I too carry a 1911, but more in the winter, and at the shop as it's an in your face don't f with me big silver gun with ivory grips. Also a great conversation piece. I prefer my .32's though.

Ball is best for small caliber bullets. A heavy coat will make a hollow point lose a lot of penetration. And we ALL know it's all about penetration! Certainly there are exceptions but for me it's the rule.
