Aussie Pub Rock

Any Aussie Pub Rock fans out there (outside of the usual suspects in Aust/NZ and Brits etc who have travelled / lived in Aust?). We experienced an era of incredible musical talent in the '70s - early '90s, with many bands not making it big out of Australia. World class musicians that the Yanks and others simply didn't understand! Think Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Australian Crawl, the Baby Animals, Diesel, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors, Icehouse, Noiseworks, The Angels, the Screaming Jets

Some examples below to get you started if you're not familiar:

The Baby Animals

BABY ANIMALS - Early Warning (LIVE) - YouTube

BABY ANIMALS - ONE WORD - LIVE (1991) - YouTube

The Baby Animals - "Rush You" (Live) 1991 - YouTube

Cold Chisel

Cold Chisel- Wild Thing - YouTube

Cold Chisel - Goodbye Astrid - Live 1982 - YouTube

Cold Chisel- Star Hotel - YouTube

1980 Chisel Manly Vale - 'Knocking On Heavens Door'. - YouTube

1980 Chisel Manly Vale - 'Best Kept Lies'. - YouTube

Chisel Rockoplast European Tour December 3 1982- 'Letter to Allan'. - YouTube

(included a few covers in there intentionally)

Noiseworks

Noiseworks live - No Lies - 1989 MTV selinas - YouTube

Noiseworks Reach Out (Touch) Live - Sydney 500 2011 - YouTube

The Screaming Jets

The Screaming Jets - Better - YouTube

The Screaming Jets - Helping Hand - YouTube

The Angels

The Angels - 'No Secrets' (Live) - YouTube

The Angels - Marseilles - YouTube

The Angels - Take A Long Line (1978) - YouTube

Diesel

Johnny Diesel & The Injectors - Cry In Shame (1989) (Uncut) - YouTube

Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, Soul Revival - YouTube

Diesel - Tip Of My Tongue - Aria Awards 6th March 1992 - YouTube

I could go on and on with Diesel - has to be one of the most under-rated artists within Australia, and incredibly under-rated globally and still going 20+ years later.

Hunters and Collectors

Thanks for the links. No most of us colonists, (you guys are colonists also right? SmileWavy ), haven't heard of most of them. Unfortunately it seems in todays world you have to make it in the US of A to make it. Great band names for sure!
Will listen to the links when I have time.

You'd have to say they made it outside Australia wouldn't you?! Same with INXS.

sc_rufctr 06-05-2012 03:45 AM

Yes but they started by playing pubs.

1983 Chisel Bootleg - 'Wild Thing'. - YouTube

Chisel actually got quite pissed at their lack of acceptance in the States - hence the song "you've got nothing I want"... and the comments from Barnsey in the above clip (accompanied by footage from Bathurst - how Aussie can you get?!): "any Americans here? Well F**** you guys"... that or being 1983 it may have been an America's Cup reference

Ha!

INXS fans need only look here:

I always liked Midnight Oil and Hoodoo Gurus. If you stretch it into the early 90s, Silverchair was relatively popular over here.

I am missing any kind of 60's/early 70's music of any kind of nationality(think Edith Piaff = France for example). Australian, UK etc. Some of these old songs give me the shivers/goosebumps. Justin Bieber does not cut it for me. Thanks for the Oz input. The music world needs to be turned upside down:):):)

Good stuff for sure, but i thimk the main reason we "yanks" don't get it, is that we have our own , very large, pool of talented, what we call, "bar bands".

Bill Douglas 06-05-2012 07:59 PM

Crowded House, that's one of yours isn't it ;)

How have you been? I watch "Manley Surf" on TV and I think of what a tough time you have living there.

Help me out, Aussies... I'm trying to remember the name of an Aussie pub rock band my friend Sharon (Melbourne) told me about... checking my ticket collection...

Yep, found the ticket she sent me... no name... ticket only says "special guests"... they opened for Southern Culture on the Skids that night at Corner Hotel in Richmond... April 11, '98.

Anyway, these guys were notorious over there at that time, and their lead singer would do virtually anything to shock the crowd into a frenzy... I'll never forget Sharon telling me, "I couldn't believe what ___________ did to a raw chicken with his tackle out."

She mailed me a local music rag with Robert Crumb-like drawings that explained what took place.

Best live aussie pub band was psychobilly band the Fireballs.
If you never saw them live, you missed out.
Incredible. :)

Bill Douglas 06-06-2012 12:47 AM

I used to see Rose Tattoo at the pub at Maroubra.

craigster59 06-06-2012 06:59 AM

I like Hoodu Gurus, not so much Midnight Oil. Can't stand the lead singer's voice.

I think you guys doomed a lot of Aussie bands in the U.S. when you sent us Little River Band. :D
