I bought a quad tonight.

Hi, my name is Fred, and I am addicted to projects. Brought home another stray. 2005 Yamaha Raptor 350. Jumped time, got if for $600.00. I just wanted something to buzz around the yard on . My neighbor has a few, and my boy loves to ride on the back with me.
I am going to spend the weekend sewing up the 930 motor I have been working on off an on for almost a year now, and then I will tear into this . I figure I can get it running for around $150.00 . I don't know why, I like buying things broken. I think I enjoy fixing things up , as much as I do riding/driving them. My lady calls me a professional turd polisher. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339123130.jpg

$600 is a good deal.

what is wrong with it? not running?

i almost died as a young man on a honda 200SX three wheeler in my teens. good times..i love those things!

I have bad memories of being towed by one of those through about five miles of tight trails in the dark after I dumped & fully submerged my XR250 in a creek. They are great machines, enjoy.

Have fun!!

Good deal! If you find anymore for that price, am looking for one!

Supposedly , it jumped time, but I pulled the covers tonight, and it is right on the marks. Has good compression, and turns easily. I am going to fill it with fresh fuel, and see what happens tomorrow morning. I bet I clean the carb, adjust the valves, change the fluids, buy a battery and have it running by the end of the weekend. The guy said , that it was running when he parked it at the end of last season. I spent the evening cleaning it up. Hanging out in the garage working on quads/dirtbikes is where my gearhead addiction began. I felt like I was 14 again.
I spent a lot of time on an ATC 250 R as a kid, fastest thing on 3 wheels back in the day. Man I wish I could go back to those times.
I just watched craigslist until something like that popped up. I was looking to spend around $1500, but I am a sucker for a "mechanics special " No way I was going to drop 8k for something to make rooster tails in my back yard.

What is it about these things. My Mom had one on her farm and it got stolen 3 times. The first time the bad guys wheeled it across a field, cut the 8 wire fence and were loading it onto the back of a truck in the early hours of the morning when a police car came along. I lived on the farm for 10 years and had never seen a police car on that road so it was good timing on their part. The next time it was just gone. But came back after about a year - police and serial numbers. Thank gawd it never came back the third time. Some friends rode up to the beach house on it and wandered inside for five minutes (keys still in the ignition LOL) and it was gone. The quad was a bit ch. I still have the scars on my chest when it landed upside down when I was giving my GF lessons on how to ride it.

I grabbed my jump pack, and sprayed a shot of ether in the intake, and it fired right up, and seemed to run pretty well. I could hear some noise from the cam chain area , and upon further inspection, I found that the snout of the cam broke off, which is what locates the cam sprocket. Easy fix, I will probably replace the cam bearings/ timing chain, and guides while I am in there. Parts are cheap and easy to come by. If only our 911's were so easy to work on.

Hey, working on one of these IS easy and good training for working on a 911!

Glad you found the issue and its a cheap and easy fix!

Looks like fun Fred!

Just make sure to wear a bash hat.... Still not sure how I missed becoming vegetative in my younger days on one of those....

fastfredracing 06-10-2012 10:50 AM

Never ride without a hat. I still have a bell moto 4, somewhere that is caved in pretty good right on the top of my noggin. Will not let the little one climb on the back without one either.

I didn't get much done on the quad today, I was busy with this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339373106.jpg

I did manage to get all my parts for the quad ordered, and should be able to assemble next week.
