Old VW question

I want to install 1969 drums on my 1963 suspension.

I have the '69 parts.
What are the mods required.

This is to go to four lug on my Formula Vee race car.

'63 is swing axle, '69 is IRS. You will need to figure out how to get IRS trailing arms onto your chassis. Look up IRS conversions on TheSamba

They make 5 to 4 lug conversion brake drums. Just replace the 5's with the 4 conversions.

Front end would be king pin to ball joint so, Samba & update your progress, please.

I need clarification here. Are you changing the suspension or just the drums and wheels? You don't have to change the suspension to go from 5 to 4. just the drums.

Just want to change the drums only.

Thanks!

Ok so you may need to change the backing plates too. I think you can just get 5 hole drums drilled to 4 holes though. Been away from VW's for a while things may have changed. Samba is a good place for direction.

Im not sure what the equivalant conversion for the front would be, or what it do in terms of the racing class the car is in now, but you could use the much larger T3 drums on the rear and keep 5x205 lug pattern and swing axles.

A lot of misinformation here....
I'd check over on thesamba, but it will bolt right up, the only mod you have to make is to cut down the nose of the drum something like .600" (IIRC, but one way is to cut down and the other is to add a spacer).
Best thing is to bolt it all up and measure.

He can't change to IRS, it's against FV rules.

trekkor 06-11-2012 08:10 PM

I don't need to stick with FV rules for this project as I will not race it with these mods.
If do run it in FV someday, I will switch back.

I want to run these tires/wheels on the Vee.
4x130 bolt circle. Same as on my 914.

Tires are from the Formula Mazdas:

Looks like Keith Stones car. Just kidding. Is that a mild steel chassis?

Wondering if anyone would catch that.

Yeeeeow. That is going to be one fun car.

jhynesrockmtn 06-12-2012 05:11 AM

What are you doing with it, short and long term? Why 4 lug, running non stock wheels? What chassis is that? Engine plan? Sorry for all of the questions, curious. Looks like a great project. Here is my 68 Zink C-4 run with SOVREN in the northwest.
