Is ATE "A-T-E" or "Aw-tey"?

How do you pronounce the Brake company's name? I always thought it was A-T-E (3 letters) but a friend of mine says it's 'Aw-Tey'.

Which is correct?

I got on their website and they have a very interesting company history page, but alas, no reference to how to pronounce the company name....

It's a German product. In German, if you pronounce it as a single word, you would say aw-tey. If it's an acronym, and you pronounce it one letter at a time, it would be aw-tey-ay, or, if said quickly, aw-tey. Either way, it's aw-tey.

Two syllables: sounds like "molly".

I've always heard it said with two.

As for ATE, I've never had any reason yet to say it out loud, or hear someone say. But in my head, I think A-T-E. I guess if its German, it could be a two syllable word, but with all caps in the name, its natural for me to spell it out loud. Of course, I don't call a certain German car a Aye You Dee Eye so I could be wrong. Then again, I call another German car a Bee Mmmm Double You.

No; the car company name is Audi, not AUDI. No?

What I get for growing up reading books about old cars...looks like Audi has it as Audi on their website, you are correct. AUDI used to be initials, and it was all caps, that was back in Dr. Porsche's days.

"From the Audi Website "1909 - Audi Automobilwerke is established in Zwickau. In 1909 August Horch had a dispute with the supervisory board of A. Horch & Cie. Motorwagen-Werke AG and as a result, left the company he had begun. Shortly after, on July 16, 1909, he established a second company, Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH, in the same city. Horch lost the ensuing legal dispute over the company same. His solution was to use the Latin translation of his name (which means "hark!"). The new company name, Audiwerke GmbH, became effective on April 25, 1910." - 12/12/2004"

Zo, Audi is apparently short for "Audiwerke", ya?

"Listen" to this:

"AUDI AG has been a majority owned (99.55%) subsidiary of Volkswagen AG since 1966, following a phased purchase of AUDI AG's predecessor, Auto Union, from Daimler-Benz.[8] Volkswagen relaunched the Audi brand with the 1965 introduction of the Audi F103 series.
The company name is based on the surname of the founder, August Horch. "Horch", meaning "listen", becomes "Audi" when translated into Latin. The four rings of the Audi logo each represent one of four car companies that banded together to create the company. Audi's slogan is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Advancement through Technology". Recently in the United States, Audi has updated the slogan to "Truth in Engineering"."

Listen: "audi", think "audio"...Cool, eh?
