Got Hail???? Need temporary car...

We decided to go out to dinner tonight, but as I came home, I noticed that it looked like it was going to get a little nasty out there, so we took my old 2000 Jetta and left Lisa's new Honda CRV (I know, but it's very practical and gets decent fuel mileage) in the garage.

We got to the restaurant and after a few minutes, it started to rain with light hail. We were sitting under a skylight and after hearing a few loud knocks on the roof, we decided to move away from it. The hail got louder and louder...

and then...

That's a medium sized one.

Car is screwed and I imagine they will total it...

Nice view.

So my question, I have a car on order that won't be here until September. What should I do for a car between now and then? Any suggestions?

Fortunately, our house doesn't appear to have sustained too much damage, just the car. We'll have our contractor check out the roof nonetheless.

$500 beater? Since you're in TX, it would have to have air, of course.

Perhaps a friend or another Pelican in the area has something they'd be glad to lend you.

Buy it back from the insur. co. and just replace the glass. Drive it with pride.

stomachmonkey 06-13-2012 06:00 PM

Huh, friend of mine in grapevine posted about some hail.

We got nothing up here.

Where were you?

Neilk 06-13-2012 06:08 PM

East Dallas, near Lakewood.

Car has issues, I can't imagine the rain coming through the dash area can't help it. I'll vacuum out the car and see what the final damage is besides the windows and some dents. Too bad this didn't happen the week before I was to pick up my car.

Thats some gnarly hail right there. Looks like a cheap daily driver project to me.

I've been living in So Cal for 39 years and have only seen hail on the ground maybe 5 times..............
It was big tho, prolly 1/4" across.
Hope this helps ;)

Serial, one of these days it'll be my turn. Until then I'm having some fun with it.

We've got some straight line winds and hail in Shreveport (but nothing like what you've had in DFW).

kaisen 06-13-2012 07:08 PM

Wow, I'm glad it's just a car and no one took a strike to the melon. That's huge hail, and major damage.

Just buy a decent $3500 Toyota Camry and you should be able to sell it for the same $3500 when your new car comes in.

Bout 15 minutes after I posted that the earth started shaking pretty good here, someone up there is messing with me and I better shut my yap about the weather.

Live it up... how about this "$5000 or best offer" beater in the For Sale section? :D

In Houston:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339650637.jpg

1989 BMW 325i red/tan CONVERTIBLE

2 owner car. My mom has owned the car since 1990 to currently.
She drives it around the neighborhood - never more than a few miles per week. Garaged.

78,157 miles
VIN - wbabb2309kec17207

Red w/black top. Tan interior. All original, including cassette player!
It has been maintained by a local shop in Houston.

Small tear in the plastic "window" of convertible.
No accidents but body work was done when her friend backed into it in their driveway.

$5000 or best offer...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-cars-sale/678471-1989-bmw-325i-red-tan-convertible-70kmiles.html

automatic transmission.

correction. the small tear is not in the window - it seems to be a fray/tear in the top - but not sure if it's all the way thru - mom has not taken a garden hose to it yet to test...

Wow!!

speeder 06-13-2012 10:30 PM

That's epic hail damage. I'll still take that '64 Impala in the BG, hail damage or not.

onewhippedpuppy 06-14-2012 03:22 AM

Nice. We had golf ball hail last week, fortunately not at my house. A buddy's new Rubicon took some damage. I'm with the others, find a drivable beater and sell it for the same amount in 6 mo.

I vividly remember as a kid going watching frogs fall from the sky. As soon as it quit raining I went outside and the ground would move. Thousands of little frogs (actually toads) were everywhere. The next day they had all gone into hiding.

I know you don't want to fix the glass and buy it from the insurance company, but it might be interesting to inquire what they want for it.

Sometimes its nice to deal with the known ( your car ) over the unknown (someone else's beater ).

That hail is insane by the way.

I will probably play that angle, devil you know.... etc. unless the AC blower is toast, then some kind of other car will have to do.
