Bob Dylan

Anyone going to see Bob Dylan this year?

I just bought tickets. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...eys/gitaar.gif

azasadny 06-21-2012 05:46 PM

I must be the only person who never liked Bob Dylan ... at all. I just never "got" his music, I guess.

Seahawk 06-21-2012 05:49 PM

Genius....not always the music. I often just read the lyrics.

I'm going to see if he is close.

Superman 06-21-2012 05:51 PM

I recently went through Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" with my six-string acoustic guitar. I am primarily a bass player, but I can play guitar.

I am a rhythm guy, clear through to the bone marrow. I don't even HEAR lyrics. I hear the rhythm. I have always loved that song because of the rhythm. It was his first (1965) full-on electric, 'rock' song. And yet, the rhythm guitar totally carries that whole song. It doesn't actually need the other instruments.

Dylan was one of those 'pure' artists. I probably agree with the many people who decried his move to electric instruments and music. His best work was done before that change.

Yup. Some of the most awesome lyrics ever.

Bob Dylan Full Concert Listings on Songkick | Songkick

Here's a list of venues. I'm not sure if he's an acquired taste, or you either love him or hate him.

We used to eat breakfast at a little hippie joint on Saturdays. They were frequently playing entire albums and Bob Dylan was a favorite.

I've always been an album guy over single tracks. I love Bringing it all back home.

Seahawk 06-21-2012 06:14 PM

Early one morning the sun was shining
I was laying in bed
Wond'ring if she'd changed it all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues getting through
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first meet
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split it up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walking away
I heard her say over my shoulder
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue"
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at her side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me "Don't I know your name ?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello" she said
"You look like the silent type"
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal
Pouring off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the caf,s at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm going back again
I got to get her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't what they're doing with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
Heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in Blue.

^^^^ Exactly Paul, that's why the man is a legend.

BeyGon 06-21-2012 06:30 PM

I always liked Dylan and one time he was to appear at the fairgrounds in Orange County, I paid the big bucks for the best I could get, 2nd row seats for me and the wife. It was horrible, the paper the next morning said it was the worst Dylan concert of all time. I still like him but that really sticks.

72doug2,2S 06-21-2012 07:13 PM

He's turned 70, or 71 and there simply is no substitute.

I'm hoping he's on game in August.

I love His Bobness, and have seen him perhaps 10 or 12 times in my life.

A great poet and voice of his time.

That said I have seen two of his concerts from his so called "never ending tour" and they were both appalling. In one we had seats near the front, and he came onstage, turned his back to the audience, and played virtually the entire set that way. (facing his band with his back to the crowd). Moreover, although I fully understand his thing about playing his tunes differently each night so they don't get old—they were almost all unrecognizable and uniformly awful.

I gave him one more chance last year in Hamburg. It was an open air venue, and although it wasn't quite as bad as the concert just described, it was a lacklustre and tired Bob, with very little left to give.

I'm not sure why he still does this "never ending tour" when he takes so little pleasure in it. Maybe I just caught two bad nights—but I have read a number of similarly bad reviews.

I think "I used to care, but things have changed" —sums the man up pretty well these days. Kinda goes with the Cadillac and Victoria's Secret commercials. He's even playing golf these days for Christ's sake.

I'll always love the old Bob. Not sure I'd see him live again. Rather crank up Blonde on Blonde on the stereo.

speeder 06-21-2012 07:34 PM

His entire musical career is one phase after another. Maybe when he's 73, he'll decide to do a tour where he plays all of his beautiful songs as beautifully as possible. It would be a first.

Hey, it could happen.

Superman 06-21-2012 07:41 PM

I was auditioning to play in a band several months ago and the subject of singing came up. I told them my previous singing roles have been very sparse, that I WANT to sing and can do it, but it's something I need to work on. The drummer asked me what kind of voice do I have....what singer does my voice sound like. I said "Well that would be Bob Dylan, except that Bob's voice is a lot better sounding than mine." I said it with a straight face.

Blood on The Tracks. My desert island CD, if I can only have one.

porwolf 06-21-2012 07:50 PM

Bob Dylan, the more things change the more they stay the same!

Amazing how all, we the PARFers, get together here.

Same. look at "All along the watch tower" Great song...for Hendrix! F'yeah!

Blood on the Tracks - +1

How about Every Grain of Sand? For those of us who perhaps read too much into these things, I think this was a profoundly spiritual piece.

And how about Visions of Johana?

Although I didn't attend, Bob played here for a baseball stadium opening several years ago...a HUGE disappointment for friends that did go. I've got probably 30 Dylan albums/cds, etc. but imo he's like Van Morrison....enjoy the recorded legacy, but don't go see a live show expecting "greatness" or you may leave very disappointed.

Very true. I attended this show in Nurnberg in '78. Thank God Clapton was there, Dylan leaves a lot to be desired live. Clapton came out and joined him on "Times They Are A Changin'".

Saw him live a few years ago. Wish I didn't, love his music but it was the worst show I have ever been to. It was a mumbling incoherent drunk guy nobody could understand and his piano playing was awful!
That being said, I am sure you will have a better time than I had.

Show was last night. Band walked out all in black against a black back drop. It wasn't the most visual of experiences. Bob walked to the stage carrying a white 1930s straw boaters hat, but must have decided not to wear it once the band began to play.

Bob loves to play his songs different from studio sets and some songs needed a keen ear just to recognize them. There was plenty of life in Bob, though his voice kinda of barked now and then.

Dylan played a lot of keyboards, harmonica, and the only guitar he played was a sunburst stratocaster like the one he played and got booed for at Wood Stock in '69.

Bob never addressed the audience with a hello, goodbye, or thank you, but on a rare interaction with us toward the end, he introduced his band members.

At the end of the concert he and the band stood in a row at the front of the stage, lights went up and they made no bows or gestures, kind of awkward. The lights went down and they walked off. They made one On-core.

I loved the play list and yes the old people showed up again, but it was a younger crowd in front of the stage, including some infants and three to five year olds.

PLAY LIST as memory serves
Leopard-Skin Pill-box Hat
Like a Rolling Stone
Ballad of a thin man
Highway 61
Tangled up in blue
Simple twist of fate
Visions of Joanna
All along the watch tower

Same here. And Tangled Up in Blue is one of my favorites from that album.

Seven times I've seen him. Almost shook his hand on stage but a screaming teenage girl tackled him right as my outstretched hand reached for his and security rushed him offstage. I'll admit his voice is getting very gravelly, last show sounded like it was very difficult for him to try and sing and voice the words. I've always loved his voice, seriously.

Chocaholic 08-26-2012 06:19 AM

Still get chills when I hear "Forever Young"...and think about my kids and how fast life is going by.

Not many songs stir emotion that way. Bob made it look easy. He may be a bad performer, but his music and impact is tattoo'd on my soul. On many of our souls.

Very special.

ramonesfreak 08-26-2012 07:23 AM

FYI, Dylan didnt play woodstock. I think you meant the 1965 Newport Folk Festival

Bob is a longtime hero and i have seen him. i was very disappointed. He is coming here next month and im debating going. probably wont. I did love his last album, thought it was great

Blonde on Blonde - best album ever.
I saw him about 5 years ago and had to go home after the concert and listen to his records to remind myself that I like him.

"I could have written Satisfaction but you could never have written "like a roling stone." Dylan to jagger.

Thanks! That is exactly what I was referring to. I must have garbled that Folk festival with Woodstock. I wasn't at either, but I was born in '69, a kick arse year.
