917/10-003 up for auction at Monterey

Don't know how I didn't see this until now, but 917/10-003 is going up at the August 2012 Monterey Mecum auction. Presume Mr. McCaw needs to raise some cash to pay for the "new" GTO. After seeing the Drendel 917/30 sell, it will be interesting to see what this one goes for - apparently Mecum thinks it will bring more. They're also selling a STP Lotus Turbine car driven by Graham Hill at the 1968 Indy 500. Very cool.

How much you got, Jim? I've got forty-six dollars, not counting the change in my coin jar. Perhaps we could pool our cash and submit a bid. If the "But It Now" price is more than $200, then we could allow additional partners.

It's a used car that's more than forty years old. I'll trade them straight across for my Ford Ranger.

Is that a hole just above and to the right of the fan mount?

Canepa has the car stored in his Scotts Valley CA facility. I've seen it; it's the real deal that I saw race in '72. Given that the Drendel 917/30 is a "bitsa" with zero Can-Am history, this car deserves seriously big money. I hope that it stays in the USA, where it raced back in the good old days of "Let George Do It."

The beast that Penske and Weissach begat at rest in Bruce Canepa's back room during last Saturday's Cars-and-Coffee event. I saw Follmer race this car at the Laguna Can-Am's in Penske/L&M livery in '72 and in Rinzler/RC Cola livery in '73. Not a Porsche for the timid, this thing really gets down the road. Yowza!

I'm heading out to the desert this week-end. Think that they would give up the block for a bonfire?
