I beg to differ on that, Angela; besides text examples, I hear people speaking those examples as well - especially annoying when it's some TV newsperson.

E.g., I heard a woman ask a waitress at a breakfast joint, "Can I have a avocado sliced on my omelette?"

I wanted to get in her face and shout, "it's MAY and AN!" but threw a salt shaker at her instead.

The misuse of the English language always upsets me, to the extent that I hadn't cooled down by the time the waitress took my order for bacon and eggs and when she asked me how I like my eggs, I said, "How would I know? I'm still waiting for you to serve them to me!"

I'm gonna go ride my bike now to burn off my anger and try to get a dog to chase me so I can squirt water in its face and make it run into a bush (but not get hurt - I love animals).

Basic spelling/grammar and basic maths are not deemed essential for some jobs. Some just wing it!
Technically that would be arithmetic.

You better beleive it.

I would hate to think that my pension would depend on todays "work force", thanks God it's not.

In addition to teacher that can not give Zero mark...

I learned from a co-worker that if her kids return the school score card signed by their parent the next day that they were given out, they get an extra 5% on their mark What a screw-up society...

Ross Sheppard teacher kicked out of class for giving students zeros (poll)

Not to worry fellow Pelicans,

Wayne is most likely already on top of it with his next book: "102 grammar projects for the English language".

Teasee Example: Project 68, When is a boot a boot but not a boot!

"today was a happy day..."

i seem to remember it could go either way...but i guess it is how the word with the "h" sounds. english was not my first language. i do remember it being a total beotch to learn.

Use 'an', not 'a', when word begins with a vowel:

An Animal

An Echo

An Indian

An Owl

An Uncle

Great, vash! The "H" rule is an exception; English is chock full of them.

BTW, would never have suspected that English is your second language.

I always wanted to have some made up to add to those bumpers that read

it is a bit more certain at 'an' should be used, certainly. it depends on how one wishes to pronounce the 'h' in honor. most (if not all) would wish to pronounce the 'h' silently, thus using 'an'.

however, i seem to recall that there is some ambiguity using the a/an article before a word starting with 'h'.

That is a good one

I wonder if the "honor student" caught the mistake on mom/dad's sticker...
