I actually like that song when it came out... I was in college and lifeguarding during the summer... It was played all the time on radio...

With all the really good music that was coming out then, how did this stuff ever make it to #1.
It was during that time when "bubble gum" music was popular.

Yep, that would get my vote... for most hated and cheesiest.

The year I graduated high school and started college... '69... U.S. moon landing... Woodstock... huge year for Creedence... The Stones release Honky Tonk Women... and this crap gets played so much on local radio, we were all making a game out of diving for the off button every time it came on.

Cheesy? Yes but I still dig the groove.

I like the roller skate key song as well. I can remember my parents having the AM Top 40 station on in the background of our house.

Thanks so much for posting that. Last time I heard that tune was when TR-6's were popular by the hippie generation.
-And they were buying most of them new!

I liked the song way back then but why such an infantile and stupid videe?
They weren't even supposed to be high, just drunken.

There's another that comes to mind.

The Brady's- Sunshine Day.

That was a milestone in choral production for it's time. Not really "cheesey"...

"The ethereal sound was created by laboriously building up multiple overdubs of the voices of Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Godley and Creme singing a single note in unison. This multi-track was then mixed and dubbed down onto 16-track tape. This process was repeated across all 16 tracks to create a lush 256-voice "virtual" choir that could "sing" chromatic chords.[1] A number of these prepared multi-tracks were then cut into several endless loops, each of which contained the basic notes of the main chords used in the song. The chorus loops could then be played by using the mixing desk rather like a keyboard -- each chord could be sounded by bringing up the fader for that loop. The instrumental break featured the repeated spoken phrase, "Be quiet, big boys don't cry...", spoken by Kathy Warren, the receptionist of their own Strawberry Studios where the band recorded the track. These whispered lyrics would later serve as the inspiration for the name of the 1980s band, Boys Don't Cry.

In this pre-sampler period, the group was able to simulate a large polyphonic choir, creating a dramatic tonal effect similar to that produced by the well-known choir sounds of the Mellotron and Birotron, but with a far richer sound, and in full stereo. Godley and Creme's "Gizmo" (also known as "Gizmotron") guitar effects device invention also is used to create a bowed cello effect that surfaces in the middle and closing sections of the song under the endless looped voices.

The same voice loop effect was used in Billy Joel's ballad "Just the Way You Are", released two years later. "

Yeah Sammy - you are not alone. OK - I get that the thread exists to poke fun at some of the less masculine type music made in the past but some of you are getting a little carried away.

The Carpenters were AMAZING period! Her voice is still unmatched for it's purity and (as mentioned in the video below) it's sense of "mystery".

In Vinny's thread about who you would like to hang out with if you could choose a recording artist....my choice easily was Karen Carpenter - so I could try to help her with her eating disorder. We've lost a lot of great ones but this one I will always morn more than any other.

Heard "Amanda" by Boston. That song features some of the worst lyrics ever written. It's a good example of how bad rhyming lyrics can get.

Fair enough gentlemen (and ladies)! I don't ever want to be the judge that takes away someone's man card!.....I will retract my comments regarding The Carpenters....I feel so much better now!

LOL, had to look it up:
Quote:

Babe, tomorrow's so far away
There's something I just have to say
I don't think I can hide
What I'm feelin' inside
Another day, knowin' I love you
And I,
I'm getting too close again
I don't want to see it end
If I tell you tonight
Will you turn out the light
And walk away knowin'
I love you?

I'm gonna take you by surprise
And make you realize,
Amanda
I'm gonna tell you right away,
I can't wait another day,
Amanda
I'm gonna say it like a man
And make you understand
Amanda
I love you

And I feel like today's the day
I'm lookin' for the words to say
Do you wanna be free,
Are you ready for me
To feel this way
I don't wanna lose you
So, it may be too soon, I know
The feeling takes so long to grow
If I tell you today
Will you turn me away
And let me go?
I don't wanna lose you

I'm gonna take you by surprise
And make you realize,
Amanda
I'm gonna tell you right away,
I can't wait another day,
Amanda
I'm gonna say it like a man
And make you understand
Amanda

You and I
I know that we can't wait
And I swear,
I swear it's not a lie girl
Tomorrow may be too late
You, you and I girl
We can share a life together
It's now or never
And tomorrow may be too late

And, feelin' the way I do
I don't wanna wait my whole life through
To say I'm in love with you

No one was saying you were wrong. Just a couple of us had a differing opinion.
Some people like the carpenters and some don't.
But thanks for leaving me with my man card in tact, for now ;)

VINMAN 07-11-2012 02:59 PM

Love the Carpenters also. The loss of Karen Carpenter in my opinion, was one of the worst tragedys to ever happen to the entertainment industry.

Speaking of losing their man cards, I, too, liked this song way back when BUT, not having seen the videe until now, the cheesy videe really kills it for me now!
