Windows Vista Home Premium Help

My desktop recently started not connecting to a network. I think it was after a restart for McAfee software. When I open the Network and sharing center I see this (two networks). If I click a view status and disable either network they both disappear. If I then go to Manage Network Connections and click the network card and enable it everything works fine till I shut it off.

How do I get this to initialize correctly automatically?

In Win 7 you click on the red X and it starts a diagnostic routine.

Dump McAfee and use Microsoft Security Essentials. Then go back and do a systems restore.

Believe me in my attempts to get this to work I tried everything. The diagnostic program was less than helpful.

The computer is connected by wires to a router if that makes any difference.

Well, I resisted posting my first (likely not useful) thought - Go buy a new SSD and a Windows 7. --I hate Vista.

Yeah, I'll second dumping McAfee and use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Third party anti-virus software has never helped me. ...only caused problems.

And apparently, MSFT really invested in combating virus issues a while back. (again, Windows 7 ...or wait for 8)

Received an OEM version of Vista Ultimate on a laptop. CPU was always blazing hot... as in temperature and the fan screaming. Installed 7 Ultimate... no issues and the PC runs cool! Go figure.

I use exclusively the freebie Avast AV for all our machines. I also run random checks with the built-in MS Defender.

Also, Win 7 Ultimate is loaded with little jewels like XP VM. Saved me thousands running specialty older programs that I never want to buy a license for upgrade versions. All these software creators push for it, but its never really needed.

Buy the Windows 7 upgrade ($60-100), install it over top Vista and it will keep your documents and settings, just follow the instructions carefully!

XP is a good product, IMO. i'd still be using it, except it doesn't do what i need it to do anymore.

So the collective wisdom is:
  • buy a new computer
  • buy a new operating system
I think I'll stick with the 3 mouse clicks at power up

In the past several weeks, I've rebuilt 5 old Dell PC's and then loaded Win7 on them and they run like new! I help people whose PC's are "dead" and they don't have much $, so I find parts (RAM, hard drives, video cards, etc...) that I've scavenged and then install Windows 7 when I'm all done with the hardware and the OS makes these old, but still good PC's run really well and everyone's happy!

Everyone has a different time vs money equation. Vista is likely to eat time. Which also means you'll have a tough time finding people to give you their time in diagnosing issues. --nothing personal. It's just that no one likes frustration.

Aside, but related: Around here there are a lot of people who call themselves software engineers. I loath that label as those people rarely engineer software. That is, typical engineers are all about optimization, whereas those code guys just pile code on top of code on top of code on top of code on top of code on top of code on top of code on top of code . . .I'll run out of space on this post, so I'll shorten it and point to their reliance on ever faster hardware. And, btw, Vista is the prime example of this, IMO. ...What a pile...

Is there one network card or two?

It's odd that it has multiple networks listed and both are set to Public.
