Computer help please
 

I'm having an issue w/ my DVD burners that is driving me crazy! Currently, my computer will recognize them, open them, close them, but will not read from them or write to them. The type of disk hasn't made a difference either; -R, +R, CD, DVD, RW, audio disks.

I've searched the knowledge base, uTube, etc. I've tried deleting the upper/lower filters in the registry, uninstalling hardware, reinstalling drivers, physically disconnecting, MS Fixit app, and finally upgrading from Vista to 7, all with no luck. WTH!

I saw this happen before and thought it might be the drives. I rebuild the computer and replaced them. After the rebuild everything worked great for about a year. The old drives were installed into another computer and worked fine there. This has now happened on a laptop too. Help!

Internal or external DVD drive(s)?

Also, if external, are they USB? I so, perhaps it's not the drives at all, but rather the USB controller.

Replace the drive!

It seems the common element is the user; try replacing that and see if that makes any difference.

Check with Asus as they made the motherboard and see what they say on line and also with their tech support people. I had this happen years ago and the issue was dust in the connector to the motherboard. Since we have two English bulldogs, two Pugs and a Main Coon, I now clean the computer every few months very well.

You could also try replacing the cables as they do deteriorate over time. Otherwise get a new drive.

I got it! The ASUS site suggested installing NERO, so after beating my head againts it for a little longer, I installed NERO and now they are working great. Go figure.

I wish that I would have tried that a long time ago but I hate installing extra software. Obviously it was the fix this time.

I would suspect you were missing a driver. Some random .dll file.

As I suggested to Milt a while ago and I also mention to my beginning computer students to download a copy of Process Explorer, set the lower window to show DLL files and then take screen snapshots to save away. Every couple weeks, fire up PE and compare what you have to WHAT YOU HAD back then. If there is any difference then you need to figure why? This is true especially if something stops working......
