Guys, I'll be down August 3-7th for our spring 13 show at Pier 94. It's usually exhausting getting there, setting up and on your feet all day at the show, but hopefully we can all meet up Monday night if that will work. Otherwise I'll be down again I'm sure. Friends have a postage stamp apartment in Washington Square that I might be able to sublet.

Since then I have had two opportunities to move down Todd. It's a dream that will never come true. The car addiction is stronger than the NYC addiction. There are only two things that could get me to move to NYC now. Full retirement or a woman.

Not even one month into the future of my last post on this thread I had my accident driving to NY for a Traveler Kids show. Incredible how much my life has changed in 6 years. And stayed the same.

My Dad grew up in Staten Island until he enlisted in the Navy in 1939. Growing up and while still living in Norfolk '55-'68, we'd make the drive up and visit his parents every summer.

I really enjoyed what I saw of the place. We attended the World's Fair too. Very cool!

NY born and raised, lived or worked in the city for years… you’d have to be crazy, absolutely CRAZY ago move to NY now. The migrant situation is absurd; almost 200k in last 2 years. Thousands of people just standing around in parks and building entrances, no where to defecate but outside. The smell is beyond belief. Pot smoke smell lingering constantly. Subways would be Russian roulette for a woman or an elderly person. Congestion pricing to drive into manhattan, up to $20, double that for trucks. Housing is insanely expensive (as always). Almost 10% state tax and additional 3% NYC tax. 8.875% sales tax on everything. Many high earners leaving, record commercial RE vacancies post- lockdowns and work at home shift, worst gun laws in the country, noise cameras with fines up to $2,000. Catch and release cash free bail District Attorneys… it is a far-leftists dream.

I'll be going down in a few months to see an old gf and see Starry Night, and eat. I have at least 5 must-go-to restaurants to visit in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I don't see moving back to NYC or to Brooklyn in any currently realistic scenario.

I made a ton of NYC and Brooklyn t-shirt designs in my past life. Do wish I could go back there to the late 90s.

The 90's were good here in Brooklyn, yes... and honestly~ it's fine now. Keep in mind, most people who 'dis' the subway don't even ride the subway. Does the subway suck? Well, yes, it does..but when hasn't it? is it dangerous? Not in my experience. I just don't like being underground ~ but otherwise it is often the quickest way to get around and seriously not that bad.
The influx of immigrants: News Flash: NYC has always had the ability to absorb lots of different types of ( mostly unwanted ) people. Nothing in that department has really changed. The same hate for the Irish is here now for these new folks. It was felt by the Italians and the Germans before them. They all have to put up with the same hate. The hate is the same it's just the faces which changed. The news likes to **** on this town so often. I couldn't even find any all these people, they are in far corners. I went out looking, went by the shelter on Hall Street about a mile away from here. Walked the whole 3 blocks and no one bothered me or even made a peep it was pretty orderly honestly. Lots of people on one block. I had to go to them, otherwise I wouldn't have seen them. I certainly don't see them in my daily routine.
NYC is not my first choice in places to live after being here 40 years, but its still pretty good fun. I find it expensive but otherwise good eating! Not the best driving town tho...

There's nothing like a foot of snow on 5th Avenue at 1 am just south of the Park. It's hauntingly beautiful.

NYC is one of the one cities i feel like actually lived up to its hype.

I would go back in a heartbeat. people who rip on NYC often are just people who dont like cities. but they arnt scared bro. no. just the smell right? totally not scared lol.

I wish the NY'ers here would move back. We have a regular Yankee infestation.

I visited 3 or 4 times for a week each time between 2015 and 2018/2019 for work (financial), and was in the city once for about 12 hours back in 1999. It's an amazing place for sure. It's a shame that I didn't see more of it the times that I was there. I've spent most of my time in Manhattan. It's an amazing place to visit, and everyone should visit at least once, but I wouldn't want to live there. Maybe if I was a billionaire, I'd have a place that I could visit.

Actually, if I were to follow your lead, I don't like small towns. I briefly lived in 2 towns of approximately 25,000 population and although I could never meet more than 1-2% of those folks, the ones I did were very provincial.

NY is one huge place and my understanding is that you live in your little space in your borough and 'visit' the rest. L.A. is huge and I've been within a 30 mile shot of downtown and Hollywood, the west side, the east side, etc., my whole life and I don't know JS about L.A.

I know my city, and as I say in my avatar, it's the pits in general. I live in a nice sector. One zip code and I have almost everything I need. If I want to go 8 miles I can be at a marina, downtown, or the Long Beach Grand Prix.

It's the 5th largest city in CA. 64 sq miles and that's big enough. But we are connected to other cities on 3 sides so urban environment is almost 75 miles of solid city.

They are not for everyone and it's perfectly valid to have a preference one way or the other. What I don't like is all of the hating on cities in general or specific cities that the hater may not even really be familiar with.

What I don't care for are smaller cities. It's either the big city or the middle of nowhere for me. A kid sitting next to me talking on the phone at Mammoth last year put it well, discussing why he didn't want to go to Nashville or Austin or somewhere. "I live in a city. Why would I want to go to a ***tier city?" :)
