On any jobs I've had where we took down paneling, I always had a plaster veneer coat priced in. 2 guys can do a bedroom's walls in 2 hours and it looks brand new.

Nowadays there is a thin fiberglass membrane that can go on first.

Accelerate the sheetrock job to now, instead of three years out. Sheetrocks cheap... you can probably hang it tomorrow, and have it ready for paint by next weekend....... Do the new windows later.

Painted panelling is worse than tacky.

Pull it off and do it right or learn to live with it as is till you do.

In progress. I masked everything off, and fired up the sprayer. Paneling is a pain to cover with brush, and roller, so I blew it on. 4 full nice coats, and coverage is perfect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341175218.jpg
Lipstick on a pig! I think it looks great. One 5 gallon bucket of paint, and 24 hours time, and a dirty old room is transformed. I even got the nod of approval from my lady. BTW- It all depends on the situation but with the project house flip I'm dealing with (not residing in and could care less), a near 100 yr. old home and half the walls are plastered, the rest are too but covered paneling from the 1970's. For me its not practical to make a bigger mess when all the oak trim has to be pulled, plaster calamity mess, removing the lathe and probably asbestos insulation in the exterior walls (try getting rid of that stuff today $$$), plus contend with a further mess... pulling the plastered ceilings down. No way is this a quicky job and so painting the paneling wins out.

Other: I enjoy reading what some of you are doing on homes around the country - labor rates, code / requirements, technique ideas, etc. and in the end its really a DIY group here. In the Chicago area, I've been involved with some beautiful and pricey remod's and its fairly common a new owner will come in and just tear it all out and do their own thing. Amazing... new $200k kitchens are ripped out and replaced or relatively new and good windows are getting replaced for high-end new energy rated type... crazy to think how long they will recoupe that expense.

I did the same thing for a temp fix in my 1825 farm house. Someone put paneling in the kitchen, without drywall!!! Temp fix was white paint until we did the kitched remodel.

6 month later, paneling came down and I brought a guy in to do a proper job of the drywall. The good news was we insulated the walls when the drywall was out!

Nice job, Fred...I spray as much as possible. Wagner airless. Even painted an expanded metal trailer - even although 'everyone' said to use a roller. Turned out great and was QUICK!
