Huh? What's going on this 4th?
I have never heard as many firework noises in my life. Could be the still weather. Out in the distance SoCal sounds like a huge crackling fire. Like take your fire place, amplify it to 11 and play the sound back through huge concert speakers a 1/4 mile away.
It's really a steady roar of explosions. By comparison, the Gulf War on TV was a pack of firecrackers. Even the smell is unbelievable. |
Shock and awe, man. Shock and awe.
I'm hearing more bangs and explosions tonight than what I used to hear on New Years Eve living on the border of East LA. BTW, my dog is all shaky and nervous tonight. Even for a Weim. |
It was the same for us up here in the tundra on the 1st. Lots of fireworks in every direction for an hour.

Noah, I know, it sounds like Niagra Falls with a few explosions in the foreground.
|
Could hear a few off in the distance, not many. Heavy rain here earlier put a damper on things.
|
Sorry about the rain.
The gunfire has come out more recently. It's the cadence that gives that away. |
I was mentioning the same thing to my wife and sister earlier tonight and they agreed. We've never seen and heard as many fireworks as we did tonight. I guess everyone really got into the spirit this year, I know we did by setting off our fair share!
|
You can call this "spirit" in the right place. Here where I live with no rain for months and everything from a wood roof too an umbrella is a bonfire waiting. I have to stay outside on my property until late to make sure we don't become a statistic.
It's slowing down, but I've got airborne now and then still. |
Be happy you weren't in San Diego for the big fireworks show.
A technical glitch set off all the fireworks slightly ahead of schedule and over a span of 9 seconds. |
It was quiet around my house. Most communities in St. Louis cancelled the shows due to the drought we are experiencing.
|
Tech, did you hear the rumble I was describing? 1000's of distant pops for hours.
|
Up here on the West side, it was pretty normal. I went to the Marina show, and caught the end of the Culver City show, and there were a few amateur street displays on the way, but it was a pretty quiet night.
Back when I first moved to LA and lived in the Hollywood hills, there was the distinctive sound of an AK being fired somewhere nearby. We don't get the guns fired in the air as much as we used to. Just heard some very random fireworks popping off, and the expected midnight barrage was just 5-6 pops. So no, didn't hear anything unusual at all. |
Noisiest fourth I can remember
Lots of mortars too |

If it didn't kill your ears from the pressure wave...
but anyway, yeah, I normally sleep at work to avoid the noise. Normally, don't really hear anything at work past 10, this time, kept up till midnight, and a lot louder closer and greater quantity than I'm used. They were everywhere when I was driving to work. |

...an overt display of lawlessness, really. |
Nothing here. Not one. Not even the town display. $5,000 fine.
|
We have had a ban on all fireworks including sparklers for 40 years. My dad lost one eye on the 4th when he was 10. The fine here is $1000/ 6 months. I don't think anyone cares. I saw only about 6 neighbors blatantly shooting stuff into the sky that could be traced back to their alley or yard. Others kept it on the ground.
I don't think I heard one Piccolo Pete this year. Always a lot of those. Instead, I heard 100's of M80's and maybe a few M100's. Of course there are always the guns in the mix. But the noise out in the distance was just incredible. You had to be outside to really get the feeling. My wife said it sounded like a war off in the distance. Neither of us has ever been in a war, so I guess that's compared to TV enactments. It amounted to constant rumble, not anything close to isolated. As I said, I've never heard this before except for the last 20 seconds of a fireworks show when they set the whole row off. For 5 hours? |
