What cars can I pull an electric vacuum pump from?
I need a vacuum pump to help out the braking system on one of my vehicles that doesn't make enough vacuum. I see in the below link that passats have them...not sure why but that doesn't matter. Do you know where it would be on a passat? What other vehicles have them and where are they under the hood. I might just go to a bone yard tomorrow

Well I can't say if I'm low but I want to try a little more and see if that helps or whether the truck ate another booster.

Just put a vac gauge in the line going to the booster. If you have around 20 inches you are good and the truck ate another one.

Ok good tip. I guess its most wise to do that. I know if I let it idle for a while it will make good vacuum (its a diesel with a mechanical vac pump) but usually I have to pick up on the pedal after pushing it down. Everything in the system is new.

"Vacuum takes a while to build up"? Hmm.
Rings not seating? Could the PCV or other check valve do this? Check another manifold vac source while cold. |

A diesel doesn't build vac from the engine, so it has a separate pump. Fords are famous for having the diaphragm in the pump fail, it is belt driven

The vacuum canisters are really small and designed for carbs...I already bought one.
The stock pump is a vane ppm I believe so I doubt it can wear out in my lifetime but I don't think it was ever that good. Where under the hood of an old Benz would I find the electric vac pump? |

Sorry, I missed the big "electric" in the post title. Mine is mechanical. Back in the day i got one from a speed shop, I had a 69 GTO with a 400 and a really lumpy cam.

If you have a power steering pump ,why not switch the brake booster to "hydroboost" ? Leave the weak vac pump for the HVAC controls.

Hydroboost is another thing thats on my mind. For now it seems cheapest to 1. test my current vac pump output; 2. install a reservoir if I can find one with large hoses instead of carb hoses; and 3. install a junkyard vacuum pump so long as I can find out if they ever shut off via a vac switch or just keep running?
