OK,. so there is a 6.0L powerstroke dead in front of my home.
we tried to jump start it. starter spins..and it feels/sounds like it wants to start..it does that diesel sound slightly. i dont know crap about the diesel motor. but if i had to guess..it sounds like the motor isnt getting fuel. the glow plug light is not coming on.
2006 truck. fuel filter? some mechanic showed up..i went out there to make sure the truck wasnt being broken into. he knew the owner's name, and had the keys..so i assumed he wasnt breaking in. so i helped. they man thinks it is the crankcase postion sensor..(i think that i what he called it).,.i think fuel filter (as a complete guess) knowing jacksquat about diesels..i go with three guesses.air filter, fuel filter, and glow plugs. any guesses? it is my nice rancher lady's (neighbors) truck. hate to see her ripped off. tow truck shows up later this morning. |
Maybe injection pump, maybe crankshaft position sensor...... Put a computer on it and you'll have a better clue

Tell her I'll buy that SOB! SmileWavy

crankcase position sensor, but I think that is more the 7.3L?????
Did he run off water out of the fuel filter? Then we get into issues with the 6.0 and it could be an assortment of issues including the injectors. I'm wondering fuel or timing from the crankcase position sensor. If it is sudden and your description sounds the same as mine each time it went out. Switched to the one sourced through International (Navistar International) and stopped having the issue. |
Could be the high pressure oil pump. The oil pressure drives the injectors so if it's bad, all the motor will do is spin. I'm 90% sure you'll have to take it to a diesel shop (or the dealer) to confirm if the pump is bad. If so, it will cost a little over $2k to repair.

Lift pump or HPOP

You need to get a sanner and check the injector control preasure. Needs to be at least 500# or it won't start. There are a lot of seals in the injector oil system The 6L as mentioned did not have crank sonsor problems. If you have ICP check for fuel. A scanner will not read fuel preasure. They are somewhat common to FICM failure Fuel Injection Control Module. One other thing is to crank it with a jumper battery if a battery has a bad cell it can still crank but the starter will draw all the current and there will not be enough for the FICM to operate the injectors. If is is trying to fire most prob not the batteries.

Batteries are a nemesis for this things along with the alternator

If memory serves, certain sensors, (such as ICP sensor), can fail and leave you parked. |
if the glow plug light is not lighting then I would say look for a main power relay - in most modern diesels the glow plug light indicates the ecu is getting power and the injection pump is getting its marching orders. If if lights but is flashing then that generally indicates you have a serious issue and need to shut down asap.

BTW, low oil cuts out power to the injectors.

ICP sensor is easy to check by unplugging and then trying to start. As stated there are many things that it could be. This is why 3 of us went in and bought the connector and software to scan for codes and live data logging. Plus is it does all kinds of things for all Fords.
