Gordon Ramsay is filming around the corner from me

Nino's Italian Restorante. They opened as a husband a wife team in 1954 and claim to be the oldest restaurant in Long Beach. I used to eat there 30 years ago and it wasn't spectacular then.

It looks dirty and tired. Yelp has it as a 2 star. About 3 Yelpers mentioned having Ramsay come and fix the place. Well, he's here.

What I didn't know is roughly 60% of the restaurant do-overs he does fail at some point down the road. And he's been at it for 7 years at the most. So, no magic wand.

I don't see these 2 70 year olds taking Ramsay's crap. I predict Nino's will get pumped up for a few months and the selling price will allow the old folks to get out.

Ah, reality TV.

I surprised Gordon doesn't get punched in the face on camera regularly...

Well, it's fairly scripted out ahead of time. A young couple doing an addition to their house on our street actually started the filming for one of the home shows. They were promised some appliances. A little difficulty arose and the camera guy said he didn't quite get it all and could they do it over. The director dude said yeah, do it again but add some spice, He told the wife to call the husband and whine and cry a bit.

I know this gal and what she did is totally in character: she ran them off the property. I met the contractor as well and he was really cool. There was no real problem and that in itself was the problem.

I know some people who's worked on his shows and they all say he's an incredibly nice guy.

Editing is a powerful job. We can make you think however we want you to think.

Frankly I am surprised it is that low. Looking at some of the hard-headed morons he has dealt with over the years, seems like most have run their places into the ground over a few years, and are almost always $100K+ in debt.

Speaking of reality tv, we had friends on House Hunters International and it was almost a joke its so fake. They had already been living in Ireland for 4 months when they filmed. None of the places they originally looked at were available to film, so they just picked random places for rent to film our friends giving their opinion. The house they ended up at was the actual house on the show, but the show crew moved their stuff out so they could film our friends walking around their own home, acting like they were considering moving in there.
Hell, the first scene they filmed was the end of the show about why they picked the home and what they thought about the city...apparently the producer was a day late arriving and the film crew figured they would get that piece out of the way.

could you b *tch slap him for me if you see him please?

He did the Greek restaurant my sister works at. They only applied because they wanted the money for the make over food was fine. He came in yelled a lot, ruined the menu and put coriander in everything.

I don't understand why anyone puts up with Gordon Ramsay.

tyro 07-11-2012 02:20 PM

If you have the netflix, check out the UK version of kitchen nightmares. It's better than the US version IMO.

is that the one off Atlantic near the freeway?
If so I ate there about 25 years ago when I first started dating my wife.
I was all excited about eating some real italian food but left there disapointed.

Ramsay should start buy telling them there's a difference between real marinara sauce and straight tomato sauce from a can.

I'm sure he will. And yes, that is the place.

The show aired last night. All I can say is that I want to move to Long Beach. They make it look pretty damn good. You might get the inference that the restaurant featured is near the waterfront. They had shots of the Queen Mary, the marina and the Naples Canals.

That stuff is all 8 miles away.

Gordan Ramsay > Piers Morgan.

I would love to eat at one of his restaurants. It would be really cool to meet the guy in person. I used to hate him, but you see how much he gets a charge out of helping these people, and I have changed my opinion of him. Maybe having to sell his Ferrari, and facing financial setbacks has changed him too.

Add a back hand for me.
People who act like that in real life around me will see me do one of two things, walk off or go off.
He seems to be a condescending spoiled prick.

And all "reality TV" is even further away (from reality)...I just don't "get" any of 'em. To be clear, I watched 'bout 3 of the very first episodes of that Gold in Alaska (for the Alaska content), and I've caught Ramsey's a couple of times years ago...I have VERY limited knowledge of 'em..but know one thing fo' sure "it AIN'T real" :D

Well, chefs in kitchens do tend to get all worked up over things.
And there is this thing we call Coup de feu, and it basically means the heat of the battle.. Stuff get's said.. but afterwards you go drink a beer and fogettabout it.

I used to do restaurant waiting as an internship, reasonably fancy restaurant.
At some point they had 2 kitchen staff leave unexpectedly so they were short staffed.

Owner , the Master chef asks me if i'm willing to help out. could have said no , but figured why not.

Day 1 they ask me to cut some stuff julliene.. supposed to be 2mm thick 4cm long
But that's the kind of stuff you learn in cook-school.. 3-4 years , cutting cutting cutting, till it's muscle memory.

i never had that.. so obviously my Julienne looked like iregular french fries instead.

The chef (not the master chef) goes ballistic on me.. And me , bigmouth that i am , yell at him from across the kitchen to tell him to put a sock in it cause i'm not impressed.

Obviously chef is not used to back talk, as most aids are glad to get a position in that kitchen and suffer gladly.

He goes completely ape ****, and throws a sauce pan my way
I duck (used to **** being thrown at me from dear mother at home)

and i throw an even bigger pan back at him.. knocking some stuff of the burners, a lot of clanging and banging

Master chef, he's in the restaurant , talking to some guests, hears with his finely tuned ear, that there is some muffled noise coming through the double doors to the kitchen, he excuses himself, gently walks to out the restaurant as if nothing happened, first door, second door closes behind him and he storms in the kitchen

WTF !
I'm like, well you can tell bozo over there, that if he wants Julienne, he better cut it himself, cause at least he trained for it.. And if he wants Julienne from me, he better ask me nicely instead of biting my head off and throwing pots me.
and if he doesn't , i'll gladly show him how to filet a fat pig in a chef's suit instead

Master chef goes, right, you report back tomorrow after lunch, i'll show you some basics, and you , looking at the chef, sort this **** out and make sure i do not hear a single peep out of this kitchen for the rest of the evening.

The next day i got private tutoring from a Masterchef of Belgium :D
But obviously 2 hours only get's you far enough to realize it's not that easy... and cutting technique really takes a lot of practice..

anyway, Chefs in Europe are high strung and can make a lot of noise.. I haven't seen much from Ramsey that i haven't seen in other kitchens.. though he does swear a bit more ...
