Rolex Watch winders....
...other than the wrist, what do the watch collectors out there use to keep the watch in tip top shape????
I have been Jonesing over the Brookstone twin winder with the pillow type holders.... I have a Datejust and a newly acquired 2012 Daytona........

I use some cheapo Chinese job that holds two watches and I'm always wearing a third. I rotate watches once a week. Since I keep it in my gun safe, I don't care how it looks, though it looks fine. $50ish and has been going strong for two years now. Still, there's no subsitute for wrist movement.

I only have one mechanical watch, so I'm the watch winder. But there's a pretty active group of watch geeks over on F-chat. Though they seem(ed) to be of the opinion, IIRC, that anything less than $100 per winder motor is garbage.

I have the Brookstone quad winder and I'm very pleased with it. I was willing to spend much more on one but it got great reviews and so far it has lived up to them.

The best thing for your Rolex is a full service at an authorized Rolex dealer every 4 or 5 years. They clean and oil the thing, replace anything that's worn and restore the crystal to new. I once watched someone do this and was amazed at the crud that comes out of these things.
When you get it back it looks like new. It costs about $250.-, but you should only get this done by an authorized Rolex agent.

Aren't watch guys all wankers? No machine required - they should wind these up with ease on a regular basis!
![]() Seriously, every time people mention fine watches on this board, i have to remember that epic Rennlist thread! Anyone still have a link to it? G |

![]() Dottore....I understand the maintenance aspect: my Datejust has had its second one.....but the Daytona is not even 5 days old yet!!!!!! The Brookstone looks goo...the orbita is tres chic but it's going to live in a safe so looks aren't really that important.... Thanks for the comments people....

Dot...that Rolex 5 year service is close to a grand here in the states. I'm guessing they won't tolerate less than 2000% gross margin on service or sales from us yokels.

Anybody know a reasonable place to sell a used Rolex. Got it as a award and it's a little flashy for me.

When I had a watch collection, all of the watches had mechancal movements and I never owned a winder for any of them. I'm of the school that believes that a watch wears more when moving than when not, never mind what some people think about "keeping the lubricant where it needs to be" or "keeping things lubricated". My experience was that the service intervals could be extended this way. If you've owned enough watches and keep an eye on their rates over the years, you can tell when one is needing to be serviced.
As for the Rolex services, I'd never use a dealer. I'd always send a watch back to Rolex, which normally runs around $600 for a normal watch with no unusual needs. As for selling one, try eBay. JR |

Yes, was 1150 last year for me, new crown and bezel added to the bill as well. And they found some rust I brought home from diving in the Tropic of Cancer.

I generally wear one watch for 2-3 weeks then switch to another, setting the time doesn't bug me.

I have several automatic watches. The only watches I keep in my winder are the ones with screw down crowns. That way I don't have to unscrew and screw them back down to manually wind them stressing the seals more.
I use a Steinhausen dual winder. It was a gift or I would have probably found something cheaper since it sells for $265.00. It stopped working last year, and I found one of the rubber belts was bad, and the other one was going. I replaced them and it has worked flawlessly since. Dual Watch Winder Pro (BurlWood)

I had no idea the service prices vary as much as they apparently do. I've been going to the same place in Zurich for ever.
I guess it's worth shopping around various service centres.
