Don't know, but it looks like a huge fly with solid black wings. I'm trying to figure out what kind of fly it is... It was huge!!
I'd be trying to figure out if there were more and find a source for mail order bats.

Art-the swamps down here in LA are full of the things. Will bite like hell too! We call them horse flies but that might not be right.
From the link that Steve kindly provided...
"Looks like a male of the black horse fly Tabanus atratus. Males don't bite." |
I see horse flies every summer, just not this large!
You should dissect that. Could be some Alien robotic probe.
everytime I start filling a pool horse flys show up. and bring their little cousins the deer flys
Horse fly. Their bite is worse than a wasp or yellowjacket sting.
or Gub'mint drone.

I'm surprised no one jumped on this yet, so I'll chime in ... That's what she said ;) |
I was waiting for that... too easy for the others, I guess.

When I was working in the mountains of SE Alaska we would have flys like that, killer flys, and of course a couple mosquitos. The flys bit me, the mosquitos don't seem to.
