Steering wheel resto question:
 

There are places that specialise in restoring old steering wheels, does anyone know what they use for the big cracks? It seems like bondo would be logical since it's strong, bonds well and is easy to shape before it cures fully.

The only possible downside to bondo would be lack of flexibility, if in fact that's needed. Old SWs are either made of Bakelite or some other type of ceramic, from the looks of them. I really want to learn to do this myself, it is similar to certain types of work I've done before and seems straight forward.

I'd also need to learn which available finishes are best, eurathane paint? TIA.

Den, this is the best stuff to use for the large cracks. Ive used it on a couple of old wheels I repaired.

And this is what I'd recommend - probably with a strip of thin leather, not the wife's boots (I don't think she owns any anyway).

When Dad bought the 356, his then wife sitched a leather wrap around the wheel and hte passenger's oh-shiat handle, used waxed dental floss as the thread. Back seats and dash look sad due to sun, heat, humidity, and improper storage, the steering wheel still looks fantastic.

Reminds me of the time I came home from the pomona swap meet with a very expensive used 73 RS steering wheel.

The wife asked, what the heck is that for?

I told her it was for the 73 RS I was restoring.
She looked puzzled and said, what 73 RS?

I pointed to the steering wheel and said "this one, duh!"

That reminds me of my favorite comic strip that used to be taped up at some parts counter years ago. It was a guy holding a steering wheel in his hand, his head was all banged-up. The caption said, "I need everything but this".
