Way to go Cliff (and Co.)! When I first did it (on an H6) I started reading and one thread talked about removing the exhaust manifold!

Tough job, but that's what friends are for. Cook them up some of that great food you're always posting!

Great - that's probably $50 / hour for you and your buddies! I told you, just some patience will get it. Many of the new car jobs require a little extra patience and swivel tools, but it isn't that the car is designed completely impossible to maintain.

Worst plugs I have done in my life were on my 97 F150 with the 4.6. Well, that's after the 993, which I have only done with the engine out - that's easy access! :D

First time I did plugs on one of the then new modular Ford engines, I wanted to get out of the business. They seem easy now. AWD Ford Aerostar is pretty the much worst, that I can remember. A 930 that still has all it's emissions stuff is not exactly a walk in the park either.
Good Job Vash!, an hour is not too shabby for that job.

I think my FIL's 2002 Toyota V6 Camry will be hell. The intake manifold needs to come off first?

FFR, you called it. The boots are flexy.

Cliff, If you think those are tough, you should try changing the plugs on a 997TT.

If that vid doesn't scare you away from a 997, nothing should.

Try doing valve cover gaskets on the six cylinder subaru engine if you want PITA.

syncroid 07-22-2012 08:37 PM

You have to lower the motor of the 997TT to start. Once thats done, you get to go by the turbos (mounted right next to the valve covers) BTW, they are not only oil fed but water cooled as well... Get where I'm going?
Does not look as complicated as the previous video, but indeed a PITA!
Thats why we get paid the bucks for what we do.

That was a new 991. From what I've seen of the 997 it is much like the 996 and other 911s, the rear hood is big and opens wide for easy access to the regular maintenance stuff and you can get to the plugs by pulling the back wheels. I've wrenched on multiple 996s, unless you need to get to the top of the motor access is pretty good.

That does, however, really scare me away from eventually buying a used 991. My first thought when seeing the small hatch opening was that it doesn't look DIY friendly, that confirms it. Pull the rear wheels, tail lights, and rear bumper to access the air filters......seriously? People deal with ridiculous maintenance requirements on a Ferrari because it's a Ferrari, Porsche has always played the role of responsible little brother. I see a lot of expensive service bills in the future of 991 owners.

Friend of mine is a MBZ mechanic and he was telling me about the SLR. Apparently, the ENGINE needs to be removed to change the plugs.

I won't complain about access to the airbox clips on the Carerra again.

My parents at one point had a Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring, I used to think the battery location inside the fender was the dumbest thing ever. Compared to some modern cars, having to pull the front wheel to reach the battery is easy access. I'm just going to start driving old stuff..........

That is insane. Thank you for posting.

My old 997 wasn't nearly as bad as this 991! That's saying something....
