Glastron Jet boats: hard to convert to a Mercruiser I/O?
I'm after a certain Glastron boat: I've essentially purchased it yet it's 1200 miles away in PA, I'm in Texas.
Glastron also made a common Jet boat version of what I'm after, & there's one locally for under a grand: a few grand cheaper than what I really want. Besides a few aesthetic differences is the jet propulsion vs the I/o Mercruiser. I think I could sell the Berkeley jet setup pretty quickly, but can you convert a Jet boat transom to an I/O drive w/o a lot of cutting/fabrication?

Probably depends on the size of transom you have to work with. Typically jetboats have a low transom, shallow-draft configuration. I/O has a larger mounting area for the gimbal, hydraulic cylinders, etc...

well it appears the transom hole for an I/O is much higher than with a Jet, as the jet is basically at the bottom, plus the hole to fill. I might pass on this local boat & continue with my much-more expensive boat in PA :/

Thanks but I'm looking at the CVX-20 Intimidator vs a normal Jet-driven CVX-20.

Yes you can - but be advised that the transom is wood - and they are known to rot.
That said - if you are going on this adventure - and you have the resources - the first thing I would do is replace the transom - then cut it out to whatever the format for the drive. BUT - if I remember correctly - the jet drive version puts the engine about 8" further forward than the IO version. BTW- http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/index.php

Hey Jeremy, is that a photo of an Intimidator's transom?? that's what I'm after, but hard to find, hence this thread.
Mark.

UGHHHHHHHHHHH thanks for the ugly flashbacks to several repairs years ago to my 1966 Larson runabout with rotted floors and transom..... GetRot injectable epoxy can only take you so far, then it's Mr Sawsall time......

used to ski on Lake Conroe in a Glastron - had a friend in Dallas that used to rebuild them - They are a classic (like Porsche) but not for the faint of heart... They were not very quality oriented with their building techniques (any boat for that matter) back in the day - probably a bubba with a chop gun and marine plywood...

The high exhaust pipes: all others were below water line.
I've always wanted one; just recently I narrowed it down to the intimidator as to NOT have a BBF and jet propulsion. Mine will be Porsche-powered. ![]()

Best boat I've ever had was a CVX 20 with a big outboard.
Big Carlson fan. The guy who owns the FBO at the local airport used to be a Glastron/Carlson dealer. A true walking encyclopidia of all things Glastron. When he quit the boat business, Glastron made him a one-off special boat of his choice. He picked the CVX 20. |

It appears the CVX-20 came either outboard, Jet with the 460cu Ford, or Intimidator-style with the 260hp Mercruiser.
Anyone know how they came to sell the intimidator? "Intimidator" is a pretty aggressive engine, but only 260hp I/O setup? I hear they were just as fast but super maneuverable as well. Check out this chick in a modernized Intimidator: that speedo says 70mph+ Barb's Intimidator - YouTube
