Suicide is painless....or cars are safer. With apologies to "Mash"
Suicide has surpassed auto crashes in U.S. as #1 cause of injury related deaths....up to 37,000 in 2009, the last year stats are available. Accidental poisoningis really climbing as a result of more ovedoses of prescription drugs (largely oxycontin and hydrocodone.
Suicide rates may be even higher due to stigma and under reporting. And suicide rates are climbing in elder demographics.

Sadly the rates are actually higher. A lot of auto crashes are suicides.
