Safari on Mac...

A few months ago I upgraded my iMac to System OSX 10.7.4 which is called Lion. I'm not liking it much at all and just recently I see that the head menu bar no longer has a Google app. Not sure if I did something to lose it or it just went away. My wife has OSX Mt. Lion and she still has it. I like that system a lot better. In converting to Lion I also lost Adobe Photoshop and Appleworks.

I wanna move 'backwards' to Mt. Lion but not sure it's compatible with iCloud.. I think it is..

Anyone else here using Lion and not liking it ?

Stayed on Snow Leapored 10.6.8.

First time in 20 years I avoided a new release.

gassy 07-29-2012 10:33 AM

I'm on Lion and wish I hadn't upgraded. Long story short I had to buy a new laptop.

Drdogface 07-29-2012 11:58 AM

I guess I had it wrong. Mt Lion is even newer that Lion. I want to go back to Snow Leopard and I don't really give a crap about 'the cloud' anyway.

Doable if you have the media.

I have a snow leopard disc if one can not be readily obtained....

I'm still on SL. Are you going to Mt lion?

I just upgraded my iMac and MacBook to Mountain Lion without issue. You are right about Safari losing the separate Google search bar. It's now incorporated with the URL bar, and the system somehow figures out if you're typing in a web address or doing a web search. Seems to work well so far.

I don't really understand when you say you lost Photoshop and AppleWorks. The software should still be on your drive. It's possible that they're old versions that won't work with OS 10.8.

Doubt it, least not in the near term.

Nothing on Lion that I need so why bother.

BlueSkyJaunte 07-29-2012 03:11 PM

I stayed on SL also. Can't afford to lose PPC compatibility. :(

Appleworks and Photoshop are not compatible with Lion....very disappointing to me. There is really nothing about Lion I like. I doubt that Mt Lion is any better. This is the frist time I've been disappointed by Apple...

I had no idea about the google bar being in the url bar. Just type in a search phrase and it'll work ??? Hmmm, must try it...

porsche4life 07-29-2012 03:24 PM

FWIW... The URL bar works for search in firefox on snowleopard already....

Ouch ! I'd like to hear more about that

Christien 07-30-2012 07:21 AM

I read too many complaints about Lion, so I too stayed with Snow Leopard.

nostatic 07-30-2012 07:42 AM

What version of photoshop are you running? I have both CS3 and CS4 running under Lion with no issues.

There are some annoying things with Lion but they can mostly be dealt with. If you don't need to upgrade (eg iCloud) then SL works great. I haven't had any real problems with Lion though, and most apps (that can be) have been updated to work with it.

fwiw I mostly run Firefox.

Drdogface 07-30-2012 08:28 AM

Thanks for the reply. I don't presently have PS on my machine since I upgraded ? to Lion. I forget which version I had on Leopard. My wife has SL and PS so maybe I can bring it over from hers. Thanks for that tip. I am presently on the cloud but it doesn't work that well for me in sync'ing my iPhone and iPad so I really don't much care about it. Leopard was OK but it kept crashing on my...Safari did, anyway. I use my wife's Macbook a lot in the AM and like SL...

Same here. I went from Safari, to Camino, to Chrome, to Chromium, to Firefox. FF is bloaty and has its quirks but at least I have some extensions available and I don't feel like I'm being spied on by Apple or Google.

I have been VERY disappointed by Chrome/Chromium. The features list is impressive but the stability is horrendous.

Ronbo 07-30-2012 10:24 AM

If you're using iCloud to any extent I would suggest trying to work with Mountain Lion. The ability to save documents directly to iCloud is quite handy. I have also noticed that the last website I viewed on my iMac can be picked up on my MacBook later on through the bookmarks menu.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-30-2012 10:44 AM

I just went over to Mountain Lion - kicks azz. One minor issue with Parallels Desktop sharing the wireless connection nicely with Mac OS but it just required tweaking a setting in Parallels 7. Now works flawlessly. Nice upgrade. The messaging feature is pretty cool and now the notifications let you dump Growl (one less thing to worry about having to upgrade & pay for), etc. It is definitely more cloud-based, but that's not entirely bad. I still keep anything sensitive local on my machine only but for shared / less-than-sensitive stuff the cloud is great and it's thus far flawless. For $20 it's worth the upgrade. I swear everything runs faster too.

EDIT: Oh supposedly native AirPlay to AppleTV now for all my videos, etc. I haven't tried it yet but am looking forward to it. I think if I want the really high resolution I'll still need the HDMI cable connection which I have but for run-of-the-mill stuff it's not big deal.

Drdogface 07-30-2012 10:48 AM

So is Mt Lion simply an upgrade or do I have to install a whole new system ? If I download it will it more or less just take Lion and upgrade it to Mt. Lion ?

herr_oberst 07-30-2012 11:36 AM

I just got upgraded to Lion - I'm hating my working life right now. I work in Photoshop all day long, and the jumping cursor issues (well documented, check the interwebs) make it very difficult to use the pen tool - a tool that is required for the work I do. I'm using CS4, I've tried CS5. A lot of the problem seems to be the mouse I'm using - A microsoft intellimouse. (I need a bigger than stock mouse, or my hands cramp up.)

I hate to say it, but it looks like Apple isn't even acknowledging this well - documented issue. I even tried using a third party program called steer mouse to try and rectify this. No Avail.

slakjaw 07-30-2012 01:42 PM

Try a Wacom?

herr_oberst 07-31-2012 12:33 PM

I became adept with a Wacom in a previous life, but then I found a mouse that I liked a lot. Oh well.
Unfortunately, time marches on and I will apparently have to adapt again to the Wacom pen. (And, BTW, come on, Wacom - please make a mouse bigger than a walnut. Just because we work in creative doesn't mean we're all dainty)

Good news, though! I have a well-worn Microsoft Intellimouse for the first person who PM's me and is willing to pay a few bucks for shipping.

I don't trust the cloud. The power is down and you need to work on a document- how do you get it?? If it's on my hard drive I have no problem. If the cloud is down you- and your business- could be too. Happened here in DC to a lot of businesses a few months ago.

Still on snow leapord too.

Deschodt 08-01-2012 06:04 AM

Stuck on Lion here with my early Mac Pro (not eligible for Mt lion). Even that last upgrade was a mistake, I should have stuck to snow leopard. Each new release of the Mac OS attempts to make the Mac more like an Ipad, which really annoys me. Haven't used any of the Exposé / launch pad, whatever other tablet like features, and each new release slows down the machine. So, no... The messaging feature seems useful however !

foxpaws 08-01-2012 06:23 AM

I always wait a couple of months before upgrading the OS - but am anxious to get icloud on my work/home machines, so have been wanting to bite on ML, (currently on SL) but the issues listed make it sound like maybe it should be a 2-3 month wait before upgrading, and deal with the fact my mobile Apples will continue to enjoy the cloud, while my stationary ones wait :(

I like the cloud (using google some now) - I have to access files from all over the place- and it gives me great mobility, and I like it better than carrying around a flash drive from work to home and back again (mostly because I always forget it).
