Hit-and-run driver severely injures 2 people, kills 4 dogs

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) -

A couple walking their four dogs were hit by a driver who witnesses said was going as fast as 80 miles per hour on a residential road.

The hit-and-run crash happened at the intersection of Garfield and Engle roads in Carmichael about 10 p.m. Monday.

Gemily West, 23, and Harison Long-Randall, 21, were identified by their friends as the pair hurt.

Authorities said Tuesday afternoon they are looking for a metallic brown Nissan Altima or Maxima in connection with the wreck.

The driver hit a stop sign first, severing the sign from the ground, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car kept going, plowing right into the couple and their animals -- which were Australian Cattle Dog showdogs, friends of the victims said.

The CHP reported the car did not stop. A witness told KCRA 3 that when she went to help the victims, she noticed the man's leg was severed and lying on the ground about 30 feet away.

The four dogs were thrown all over the road.

"I ran into the house to grab a pillow for (the man's) head," said Corinna Agee, who lives nearby. "Before I knew (it), there was blood everywhere. He did lift his head for me to put the pillow under his head. The (female victim) was just screaming. Screaming ‘My dogs, my dogs, my dogs.' "

Besides the severed leg, the man suffered a broken hip and the woman victim suffered a broken leg.

All four dogs died from their injuries.

The couple were taken to a nearby hospital, where the CHP said they are in stable but serious condition.

The CHP said officers were able to gather a little evidence about the car at the scene.

Long-Randall is in critical condition while West is listed as fair, according to a check Wednesday.

Sacto 9-1-1: Hit and run victims remain hospitalized

The couple were struck down in a crosswalk Monday night about 10 p.m. at Engle Road and Garfield Avenue. The CHP is searching for a 1986 or 1987 Nissan Maxima with light-brown metallic paint. Investigators say the vehicle is missing its driver's side mirror and has damage to the left side running lights and turn signal light.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (916) 338-6710 or (916) 861-1300 after hours.

What a tragedy. If possible could you keep us posted with any updates? Bad drivers are my biggest pet peeve....and this is a perfect example why.

That happened 3 blocks from where the old codger ran a stop sign and hit me, he was going 50 mph, about. Speed limit is 30 mph through there I believe. Guy that lost his leg, pushed his girlfriend out of the way.

and he was still drunk driving, pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving and they noticed his car matched the one from Monday night.

There are some things that should be exempt from the cruel and unusual clause. Anything with kids being number one reason, but this would qualify as well.

I will hazard the guess that vigilante pet lovers will be more of a danger to the 'driver' than if he killed somebody. Good luck surviving this one buddy. The court system will be kinder.

There are probably 10-20 of those exact cars in the greater Norcal Sac area, max.
Probably 1 or 2 within a 10 mile radius.
Driver will most likely be a young male looking for replacement parts.

Thanks for the update. I don't even know what to say - this piece of garbage is yet another repeat offender. Our criminal justice system is so broken it is ridiculous. This type of loser should be sent to French Guinea never to be heard from again!
