SCCA Corner Workers to be Featured in Mid-Ohio ALMS Broadcast on ABC

LEXINGTON, Ohio (August 3, 2012) – Some like the term “marshal,” some prefer “flagger.” Drivers call them their “Angels in White.” SCCA’s corner workers are instrumental in nearly every amateur and professional road racing event in the United States, and they will be the subject of a feature during Saturday’s American Le Mans Series Presented by Tequila Patrón Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge race broadcast, live on ABC at 2 p.m. (EST).

As part of the renewed ALMS/SCCA partnership that names SCCA the “Official Grassroots Motorsports Partner of the ALMS,” each remaining race in 2012 will include feature content on Sports Car Club of America in its broadcast.

“We’re very excited to continue our relationship with the American Le Mans Series,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “The ALMS is something to which many of members aspire, and we’re thrilled that the series and the television team have chosen to feature our SCCA corner workers during the Mid-Ohio broadcast.”

I'd love it it they would provide a audio feed of the corner workers doing race commentary. Some of the things I have overheard when visiting a corner station have been very funny.

We do try to keep it clean, but not always kind.

Worked many tracks for a number of years and actually gave it up about 2 years ago. Loved working the Grand Prix's, called canyon racing. The new track that is almost complete that's in the New Orleans area have almost completely automated each corner station. There are lights and message boards at each station. Instead of needed 3 per station they are running one per station, scary for the drivers with regards to first responders. You gotta love it to do it for years, but its a hard thankless job, first on the track before the race and usually the last to leave. If you guys have cars and run a course or two make sure you at least acknowledge these guys. remember "no wave, no save"

I work with a number of people that have been working the tracks for more than 30 years. That's loving the sport.

I've met some awesome corner workers myself. The guy who's often at the top of the Corkscrew at Laguna has been really cool in the past, and generally lets us photogs get into some cool shooting positions that often aren't possible depending on who's working it. Being up there during the parade before the concours at Rennsport IV was especially awesome since we were able to get super close.

You guys can always find a bit of food and assorted cold beverages at my pit anytime (cold track)

When I have managed to save a "moment" I alway got a kick out of getting a thumbs up from the CW on the next lap and even in a race, try give a wave back.

I'm thinking of makling a trip to NOLA at least for a track day next season. It looks like a great facility.

Once the north course is finished it will be the longest rack in the US. From drivers perspective the surface and design is second to none.
