Repetitive humming

If you are around someone that does this, how long can you hold out?

By repetitive humming I mean, repeating the same tune for 20, 30 minutes at a time...

If I do it, somebody please stop me...

People who hum or whistle idlely have nothing else to think about.

They probably are happy.

I have a friend that hums nonsense. I think he's messed up.

Man, that feels good. Don't stop.

john70t 08-09-2012 07:58 PM

Don't know what tonal/wavelength/hertz the typical humming is, but some sounds are universally pleasing.

A parallel is the shopper olfactory experience of first walking into a store, and smelling stink vs. inviting florescence.
Except for those immediately allergic, it makes the time spent more attractive.
Customers attract customers.

Corporations are quite versed in subliminal intonations:
-You hear it in the music, and the immediate visual images past the doorway.
-Old experiments tried included sub/hyper-sonic shopping suggestions outside the human hearing spectrum, and pumped over the sound system.
-Anything which controls the cattle.

Not that there's anything wrong with that! :)

As has been said of, for example, the sound "om", as in the chant, "om mani padme hum". Subliminal influence; interesting stuff.

My mother-in-law hums tunlessly 24/7. She's a wonderful, loving, giving woman who drives me bat-schit crazy.

Joe Bob 08-09-2012 08:21 PM

Does she have any teeth?

Yes, all of them. But her younger sister has none and wears dentures. She might be more your speed. SmileWavy

I prefer the ancient Thai chant "Ooowaaa taiguuuu Siam".

Repeat it.;)

That's fowl play. :) I've probably gotten as many on that one as "Say 'Knock knock.'"

Knock knock

john70t 08-09-2012 10:13 PM

I'm not a musician.
What chord is the Hum? A?

Nah, you're prepared.

Ya gotta catch the person off guard - they say "Knock knock", you ask, "Who's there?", they say, "Uhh...", you laugh then say, "No, seriously, say 'Knock knock'", they bite again and say knock knock, you ask again, "Who's there?", they say, "Uhh..." again...or they take a swing at ya. :)

I've had people bite on that one three times before they caught on. I can be a real horse's ass. :D

Damn, I can't believe that I've so tediously described that old kid's joke. :(

No. Vocal.

aigel 08-09-2012 10:29 PM

Drives me nuts, whistlers too. Often it is a tic. I think it could make me kill. I have to get away quick - 5 minutes or less. It is up there with clipping fingernails or constantly sniffing / other audible ticks. I get on my family's ass if anyone even remotely looks like they are starting a tick. I hope my kids will thank me one day. Hummmmmmm.

I have a whistler working for me. He sits in the next office. I can hold out for maybe 60 seconds and then I have to remind him that he's free to continue as long as he shuts his office door. He's usually having an out-of-mind experience when he's whistling, so he just spaces out the whole shut the door thing. LOL

i have a constant humming in my ear anyways.

some rhythm would be nice...

notmytarga 08-10-2012 09:32 AM

We have a nurse that works in our operating room that constantly does a sing song wordless tune. Sort of a higher pitched hum. When full force, she only interrupts the sound to talk. At first it seems pretty, then you hear it throughout a case competing with Alt Nation on the satellite radio. Many OR people don't like working with her because of this.
Another colleague hums a lot while he works - he wears hearing aids and I think he hums to quell tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or perhaps as a defense against people wanting to talk to him, which is difficult for him to hear.

gassy 08-10-2012 09:47 AM

My 9 yr old daughter is a hummer. When she's not talking, she's humming. She's a happy kid. Always making noise though. If she weren't my child, she would be duct taped from head to toe against the water heater in the basement. Can't fault her though-- she lets me take weird photos of her.

I see a future for her in anesthesia...

Always amazing what turns threads take!

I sat in the waiting room this morning with a fat heavy breather that sounded like he has a can of peas down his windpipe. That's pretty bad too albeit not a tick. A good reminder to stay slim and off the chokes for sure!

Wait, you're not a girl?

widgeon13 08-10-2012 03:27 PM

Our beautiful 19 month old granddaughter does this and it's music to my ears. Of course she goes home after a while. You know, Twinkle twinkle and I'm a little tea pot, etc.

21 years and counting...:D;)

What I do is start innocently humming another tune... works every time until she catches on.;)

If you really thought I was a girl, would you have phrased your praise:

Yeah, that's different, you worry when she's still doing it at age 19!

I really hope you meant to post that in green because it is disturbing on several fronts.
