SoCal Smog

Hey guys, I need a recommendation to help me out with an '81 SC that is due for a smog check. It won't pass as-is and I need to find somebody that can fix it so it passes. The guy that helped get it fixed in the past isn't available right now. I don't want to go to just anybody, I'm looking for a shop that is Porche-friendly.

Inland Empire or Los Angeles is my area. Send me a PM if you can recommend somebody.

Do you have a 3mm Allen wrench? And, you know, sometimes these things just need a new cat. Unfortunately they have gone up a lot to $577 at Pelican.

If you have an OEM Catalytic converter you may be able to get a shop to weld in a CARB approved one. I had to do that with my Carrera before I sold it. $190 and change out the door, even welded on a new O2 sensor bung.

I guess you can get away using a generic cat. Most smog guys would only know to look under the left side. They don't know what the thing is supposed to look like. Of course, now it will be cobbed up for future replacements.

Came across this years ago:

"lack of the oxygen sensor is the most likely culprit. if all else fails, unplug one injector and go thru on 5 cylinders. that cylinder now acts as an airpump and the emissions will be noticeably reduced. on engines with a low compression cylinder, which can cause high HC, unplug that injector. on CIS cars, braze up the tip of an extra injector. on carb cars, plug a mainjet with a round toothpick and break it off. you didn't read this."
