So if a vendor sells a part that takes a special tool to install the part, don't you think they would sell it or know where to get it?
Pelican does't sell the part, so I went with *********. They seem to be hit or miss, but overall, not bad. After not being able to locate the tool, I sent them an email asking if they had it or knew where to get one and if not, I'll have to return the part. Their reply, "we don't sell it", and a Return Authorizing number... Business must be good! BTW, what I needed was a special socket to install a ball joint "nut". The "nut" is round, 60mm wide and has 8mm wide indentations at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. Looks like this: Amazon:Ball joint pin socket for Mercedes Know where I can get one? |
Lots of vendors sell parts , but do not sell the special tools to install them.
Try Assenmacher tools, all German specialty tools, they should have it, or know where to get it. |

North of the border, it would have been; twice the price, we dont sell it and don't take return :rolleyes::rolleyes: Yeah, business must be really good. They can all go bankrupt bunch of "Trou de cul" (google it)... I have not problem, spending my Canadian pension money South of the border :) |
I don't know who there told you they don't have that tool.
Porsche 911 & Carrera Suspension Wizard - Page 1 http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ocket_P210.JPG They have always carried that tool. They were made by Sir Tools when I was there. Don't know about now, maybe back ordered. Wait 'till Wayne see this. |
baum tools in florida probably has it too.

Ummm

However, the 911 ball joint tool looks like it might work, I'm to lazy to go and measure mine at this moment... The spindle wrench for some Ford 4Xs may work as well... Check Lisle tool at your FLAPS |
BTW, if you forgot to tell us that the car is a Mercedes, I found that tool that you showed for 20 bucks. Dare I say where? Not until Wayne speaks. And he needs to know what car/year.
|
If I'm not mistaken, there is a size difference in the tool above and what I have.
I tried Assenmacher and Sir Tools, but no joy. |
To clarify, I looked on-line at Pelican for the ball joint and didn't talk to anyone at Pelican.
The tool you found is probably for an M class and others. I have an R class. The original ball joint was pressed in. The replacement has a "nut". Edited for clarication |
Correct. I have no problems with Pelican. Always good service. It was my first choice when looking.
It ********* that troubles me with their lack of customer service. Quote:

Welcome to working on MBZ. Pelican now owns Peach Parts. They will probably have the tool. If not, Baum or Sir Tools.

Find a good auto parts place, an indy not a chain, often they have displays of specialty tools, Lisle is a popular brand...
Take yer nuts... and see if one of the 4wd spindle wrenches fit... Lisle Corporation Lisle Corporation |
Thanks for the ideas. I'll look around some more before I return it.
Another thought is what do I torque it to? No info. I thought about making one with an impact socket with 8mm wide cleats welded to the outside. Good excuse to use the welder. :) |

Proprietary information/access. :(
As a ballpark, torque specs might be similar to similar cars. Blue loctight and duct tape. |
The torque on the nearly equivalent Porsche part is something like 250 ft lbs. Whatever it is, it is twist-the-car-off-the-jackstands torque.
|
On one of the links above, it called for 266 ft lbs on an axle nut. I thought that seemed reasonable.
