Wayne, our 5th child had Down Syndrome. He lived 40 hours and died in my wife's arms. That was 11 years ago. It seems like just yesterday. They are very special children that will bless your life beyond measure. Enjoy every moment you have with her.

Wow, Douglas, that's a sad tale. I didn't know Down's could result in such a quick death. Very sorry for you and your wife.

The valve in his heart never turned causing him to suffocate. Respiratory Therapy worked round the clock at Kaiser Sunset. We had never seen hospital workers cry. It's a story for another day.

Beautiful children Wayne. They are truly God's gift. My nephew has Downs, he just turned 46 years old. Loves to ride in my P car, all smiles and laughter. Great kid. Good luck with the fundraiser..

I (and I would guess many others) tend to turn out stuff like that. I spent a large portion of my yoot with my grandparents in New Mexico. They (and I) too care of a man with severe down's syndrome. He wasn't really a relative, my grandparents took him in and took care of him for the rest of their lives after his "real" parents abandoned him as a young boy to die on the streets. He was at least 30 years my senior but I treated him as if he were my little brother. His speech was so severely affected he was difficult to undertstand at all but he always had a big hug waiting for me and would follow me to the ends of the earth. Somehow we could understand each other. In high school I did some volunteer work through the church at a place called hope school in Anaheim. Talk about tearing your heart out. The people who attended that school all had one thing they had in common, the ability to care and to show love for others. The hardest part for me about spending time with those with Down's syndrome was how it made me look at myself. I hate to admit I didn't like what I saw too much of the time. The pettiness, the distrust, the lack of patience or empathy, the dark side of one's personality. At least once the thought flashed into my head, who was limited more; me or them? it wasn't that long ago that in some places of this country people born with Down's were allowed to die or were locked up in an institution. Their average life-span was in the 20's or 30's. I bring this up to remind us all how far we've come and how far we still have to go. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it but in at least one way the world is a better place than it used to be. |

Just signed up and paid.
It's a great idea -- awesome cars and a very worthy cause.

Early 911 Challenge
Wayne, I am truly sorry that I cannot make your Fundraiser.
However, I just purchased 2 tickets for donation for a family, or families to attend. I CHALLENGE anyone with a Early 911 to make the same Pledge to this Very Worthy cause

Yup. Too adorable. I haven't had the pleasure to be around a Down Syndrome child or person for longer periods, but I hear they are Angels.

I just purchased a ticket. I don't know what I'm doing yet Saturday night but I got one anyways, so I will be there at some point. I'm only 20-some minutes away.
Nothing is better than hanging out with fellow pelicans, especially when there is a good cause involved.
