Thank you Doug. I crack up every time we go for a drive. My daughter and wife are always commenting on cool cars they see. Neither one is afraid to get their hands dirty either. A big plus! More pics to upload but not tonight. Too tired. Have "Things" on my mind. Been up since 4:00 am this morning. My mind would not shut off. God help me! I am OCD! Even my daughter is busting me on my spelling.

John, send pix, could be a Road trip coming up..

porsche4life 08-17-2012 09:18 PM

Thats what I was thinking too byron... Problem for me is the logistics of getting them on home. I'm in LA every other week right now, but usually am already pulling a trailer for work...

johnco 08-17-2012 10:15 PM

I'll try to get some tomorrow.. with the 2 things I also let you have 10-12 engines, 3 dune buggies, assorted parts and pieces and if I'm in the right mood you might get the 74 Ghia convert also. want an 88 944 for $500? take it back with you also. how about a couple 60's american iron.. 66 mustang, 60 ranchero, 60 belair, 60 El Camino, 64 tbird. etc.. bring a BIG trailer and take it away.. my daughter just moved back from texas and into a house behind my shop.. didn't have room with all my old cars and stuff stored behind my shed before and then she brings 2 trucks, 66 mustang and 62 olds back with her. need to clear out stuff I don't need and don't want anymore to make room..... so I can get some different stuff

porsche4life 08-17-2012 10:27 PM

Oh wow... That is quite a few trips with a big trailer.... ;)

I'd be happy with a ghia or a thing.... Who has time for both?

What part of louisiana are you in?

I do, too... ditto for the driving lights up there and the rusty chain on the front bumper... and the metallic teal paint... and even the whitewalls, which I usually detest.

I guess it's because altogether, it carries a certain air of personalization given to it by its former owner... who must have been an interesting woman.

But I know y'all are going to have a lot of fun redoing things and putting your own touches on it.

German flags on the doors, maybe?

Desert camo with a post-mounted MG42. Africa Corps hat and goggles.

syncroid 08-18-2012 09:04 AM

I'm going to hook it up to my truck this morning and haul it over to San Jose Steam Clean and have them do their magic on the under carraige. I have to either take the axles off or block the clutch in though first. I think the transmission is stuck in two gears at once.
More pictures coming soon.

181 gang has a registry site with some good links: Type 181 Thing Registry Links

Dang, cash and opportunity rarely meld... Oh well. There's a few La. aircoolers who would love a shot at that list. You probably know them... CenLA VW Club or Air Coolers Volkswagen Gang - Austin, Dallas, Houston, Killeen, Baton Rouge, San Antonio, etc... we are not a VW club..

How similar in dimensions were a Thing and a Kubelwagen?

Chuck,

Whats the guys name? I know two of the guys flying "missing man" formations in Stearmans around here...

Johnco,

You do not know how hard it is for me to look the other way and not head to your neck of the woods with a trailer right now. Always liked "the Thing's" and yours sure sound like something to save!

Joe

I had a '73 and it was absolutely reliable and indestructable.

syncroid 08-18-2012 04:14 PM

We made some good progress today cleaning the Thing up and pulling out all the funky wiring, switches, lights, and stuff.

Make sure you have a cover on the positive terminal on the battery....one fat kid and the coils from the seat come in contact. Instant fire....ask me how I know.
