Has the matte finish on cars already moved on?
I remember in the mid eighties seeing a picture of the Ruf NATO 930 in olive drab - that was very cool - what an idea! Over the years I've seen a few matte black 911s (or maybe an old 67 Mustang..), still pretty cool, stealthy sort of.
In the last month I've seen a matte white Porsche Cayanne and two Mercedes AMGs with a matte finish, one white and one black. When the manufacturers offer this it just doesn't work for me, I'd never even consider one (not that I can afford an AMG). Are they trying too hard..? There is exclusive and now, ultra exclusive. what next? |
Matte paint is soooooooooo 2011!
Just as black wheels are soooooooo 2010! |
Are flames passe'?

Saw a new Dodge Challenger in flat black... driven by 20 something white kid with $200 sunglasses, cigarette, and designer jeans hanging half was down his a$$ ghetto style... he was sooooo kwel... NOT!
Dunno if Dodge offers that paint job? As far as paint jobs for me it is a "it is your car do what you want" thing. FWIW I'm more offended by the snot green and baby poo yellow colors some Manufactures offer. |

One problem is that's it's not durable. BMW recommends a special cleaner for the paint and to remove bird droppings or tree sap ASAP.
It looks cool but you'll also get unwanted attention from the cops. |
I'm thinking of a Matt Grey wrap on my C6 Corvette. 106k miles on it have left a few scratchs

Vinyl Wraps are the new "Matte Black Paint-jobs".
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mFq_mJ7nMdE?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I'm thinking about doing this on some of my interior bits that have worn the paint some from the P.O. |
The guys doing that hood are morons, and the fact that they didn't ruin the vinyl is a miracle....
|
I'm just curious how good those vinyl wraps are going to withstand years baking in the sun. Sure it protects your paint, but what about when all the plasticizers are gone?

You can always dip your car...It peels off when you want to go back to the original paint.

I would not leave a wrapped car out in the sun longterm. Most films claim a 7 year life, but I will tell you that its NOT going to be removed easily in 7 years if you leave it out 24/7....
|
We just did two complete paint jobs in flat black just last week ( 930, and an M3) and also had a ferrari wrapped, so I would say it is not 'out' as yet..
|
Prep on the initial wrap, the removal process and how long it was on will be the question after a long period of time. I wouldn't do it to a new car. leaser or one that I wasn't going to keep for the long run. I certainly wouldn't PAY someone to do it.
Personally if I was to do it my personal ride I would cover the car in parking lots and garage it. But I do that already. |
Tempted to plasti-dip spray my cayman white now. Thanks for that :-/

$59 a gallon, they recommend 3+ gallons. Don't see what they want for the handy dandy sprayer.....
