That Phone call at midnite....

Was a crazy busy week. Went to bed around 10 last night. The phone rings at 11:15. The minute I heard his voice I knew it was bad. my 17 year old was in a head on collision. "Dad come quick". After a few questions I was out the door. Can I tell you that a Toyota Tundra can really move? I get there, 2 fire trucks, 2 ambulance and numerous police. Road is shut down. My heart sank. Got to him and he's standing by the car. Relief! Woman in a Kia SUV crossed center line and hit him. She ended up in the ditch on opposite side flipped on her driver side. All i can say is that for a 13 year old Honda, it saved my son's life. The A pillar performed well. The pics speak for themselves.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1345311431.jpg

Wow and Wow!

Tell that boy to buy a lottery ticket.

Jim Bremner 08-18-2012 10:45 AM

Glad to hear that he walked away!

Was she drunk?

tevake 08-18-2012 10:49 AM

Whew! I'm so glad to hear that your boy is OK! they just had a news report on just that sort of hit, off center frontal. Most of the cars tested didn't do very well in protecting the driver. Big relief to see that the old Honda did. How was the other driver? I imagine your son will be sore for a while, it could have been much worse.

Count your blessings
Richard

The Honda held up very well. Glad your son is OK....Scary nite for you for sure......Best of Luck....

I don't think she was drunk, not sure if they ordered a drug/alcohol test. Other car had 2 occupants. Neither was injured bad. After my son realized what had happened he crawled out of his car and ran over to help the others out of their car. Then in the midst of helping them he realized how he was bleeding and stopped to call me.

Thank god your son is ok.

Thanks goodness he's OK. I had to make that call once to my dad when I was 20. I crawled out of a flipped Toyota truck only to not help the other kid. He ran a complete red from a little side street trying across a four lane blvd racing and nailed me right on the driver side door. Had it been a car I was driving, I would not be here typing today. The impact bent the frame on my truck like a banana. I wanted to deck him as soon as I got up off the ground with cuts all over my head. I heard my father's voice tremble that's when it hit me how much he cared for us. Your son and I can count our lucky stars. No injuries but minor cuts. You say hello for him for us.

Jeff

Thank goodness he is fine. Wow.

MMARSH 08-18-2012 11:40 AM

Scary. Glad your son is okay.

Moses 08-18-2012 12:47 PM

This will forever change the way your son looks at driving. Even when you're doing everything right it can go horribly wrong. I know your feeling of panic and helplessness after you got the call. And the complete happiness when you see that your boy is ok. That old car did the only important job you ever asked of it.

pete3799 08-18-2012 01:00 PM

Hope i never get that call.
Glad he's alright.

mikester 08-18-2012 01:11 PM

Good grief...

Glad it seems that all is okay.

Have the kid take it easy for a few days at least.

masraum 08-18-2012 01:11 PM

thank goodness or was just a scare. I've been there a couple of times.

Joeaksa 08-18-2012 02:08 PM

Glad to hear your son is ok.... wearing a seat belt and having air bags does tend to help! Now tell him to pass it along to his friends to do the same thing when they drive!

speeder 08-18-2012 02:53 PM

Yep, scary stuff. But the fact that it was him on the other end of the phone is a good sign right off the bat.

lm6y 08-18-2012 03:28 PM

Glad to hear he is OK. That's the most inexpensive car you've ever owned. What ever you paid for it, it protected him well.

Instrument 41 08-18-2012 03:36 PM

I hope this will cause him to more careful. He kept saying that he didn't mean to do this, his mother my ex is really being a ***** about it. He understands now why its called an "accident" and just how fast these things happen, when you least expect it. He's been asleep for a while and apparently the nightmares are coming. He woke up screaming.

Zeke 08-18-2012 03:40 PM

Yes, nice luck (or was it?) to have gotten the brunt of it on the corner. That's a good crush zone absorbing a lot of the energy. I wonder if his actions helped him away from a squared up head on. Had that happened, he might not have done so well.

Scary stuff.

My daughter is driving a 2005 Honda Accord to high school this year. What year and model was your son's?
