Functioning concept for device of the future
 

This video is worth watching if you have an interest in technology and it's future direction and its integration into our daily lives. In other words gadget geeks will like it-

That ought to work great for white T-shirt wearing whites living in caves. Californians, not so much. (read: projector based display have a ways to go to work in sunlight and/or dark surfaces.)

I got lost at choosing the ecologically responsible toilet paper. I generally opt for the one that doesn't make my rear look like I took sand paper to it, followed by a price comparison.

If you put a helmet and mask on her, she would start to look like Darth Vader.

Cool, but there is such a thing as too much information.

I agree that some of the content (toilet paper) etc is wandering however like any emerging idea its end use application is hardly ever predictable to a pinpoint. I think its the beginning of a great discovery process. If Apple had been in charge of the PR on a concept like this the masses would be quite interested. I myself could care less about some algorithmic program that makes decisions about toilet paper etc but the concept will have very useful applications for many users.

Anyone remember the very first cell phones? that was an idiotic looking device that was cumbersome and unrefined. Today there are very few people who can do without the latest iteration of it.

with all the focus on emerging lighting technology the need to live in a cave in order to see the projected image as demonstrated in the video will rapidly recede. Just imagine if you could set your smartphone device on the table and it projected a keyboard onto the surface or interactive games- this would be feature that would sell, period. Its all about the almighty dollar$$.

One or all of these is my idea for a functioning concept for device of the future...

Do you really want to draw a virtual circle on your wrist to know the time?

I mean, I -get- the novelty of what they are doing, but big inputs, for what should be easy tasks (like knowing the time) should not take big gesticulation. ...that's way too playschool to be an effective '6th sense.' (as they call it.)

fwiw, personal augmented reality has worked pretty well using sort of 'heads-up' glasses for the last decade, plus.

btw, would you really want other people seeing your projection on some acquaintances shirt? I mean, like the TP, what if you have notes that the guy is a big ass-wipe? :cool:

The tablet as we know it was "playskool" at one point early in its design evolution as well. One has to ignore the given examples of uses for a technological concept like the one in the video and apply an outside of the outside of the box perspective

heads up glasses are a great stepping stone along the evolutionary path of data/media interaction these devices have served their purpose but technology is racing forward with new concepts that will replace older ideas.

I too think the examples of the application/uses of the concept are goofy as well. Think of it like this- Its a hardware/software concept that needs refinement and good apps, etc.

Cool, but a smart phone can do pretty much every thing they demonstrated (which still amazes me every day). I just don't see the smart phone as a huge inconvenience or as a problem to be solved.

Funny how no one seems to understand what a raw concept is.-

After watching the video I thought of the Segway. It's a super cool application of technology, but not practical for mass market acceptance.

How do you see this product/technology transitioning to mainstream use?

I think this will be better when they lose the clunky and slow gesture input system and switch to direct thought.

I guess I am not a gadget geek.

I see the hardware less interface being developed for any environment where interacting with actual hardware is cumbersome and or impractical. Wet environments come to mind as do environments dealing with explosives or combustible gasses where reducing ignition sources is paramount. the keyboard projection/interface is most intriguing and the info projection onto items would be good for workplace environments where labels etc. are either impractical or impossible and crucial data is needed in a short time frame. Somewhere in the vast landscape of industry and consumer products this technology definitely has a use that would improve speed, quality and price.

I cant imagine it being used as a smart phone but as an addition to the currently evolving tablet gadgets it could definitely be something built in to the tablet (I-pad). Allowing the tablet user to project a keyboard (from the tablet not something around ones neck) onto a table surface instead of having another chunk of hardware.

When someone shares a technology concept like this it is for good reason. It will attract the right people that have the vision of how to integrate it into an existing product or how best to further develop it. Engineers and developers figure out the wiz bang and the product designers, market analysts, etc figure out how to use and package it. Apple is an excellent example of effective product design and knowing how to present it to the consumer whether you like the company or not they are the ones being copied by everyone.

In short I see a nugget of ideas buried in the concept which can't be taken so literally. Its just a concept with new ideas yet to be expanded on.

Yes, what she is presenting is a baby step. Not really a big thing to me. When you can think it and get it done.....

Probably not as far off as we may think. A lot of effort has been put towards this goal over the last 40 or so years.
