The AR is completed, all the way to being an SBR, I needed a new project while the Carrera is down.

I caught the long range bug shooting the AR at a Pa. range that goes out to 1,000 yards.
Here's the start of the benchrest long spoon I'm putting together...

Remington 700 factory short action soon to be blueprinted
Krieger barrel chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor 1:8 twist
Masterclass laminated stock
Thinking about Jewel trigger
Near Mfg, scope mount & rings 10 moa
Still undecided about a scope but was looking at a Nightforce 12-42x56. The vertical moa isn't all that good but should suffice for 1,000 yards, (won't shoot that distance but maybe 1 or twice a year).

Beautiful work and excellent service. I emailed Matt the barrel had come in early. He had my bolt moved up and shipped within a day of my email. And of course look how beautiful their work is.

As far as optics go.....check out Sightron scopes.

Not quite NF quality, but significantly less $$

I run a Sightron SIII 8-32x56 (mildot reticle) on a Sako TRG-22 (.308) with Near 20MOA rail and Burris XTR rings and have shot successfully at a 1000 with it several times. 70 MOA adjustment.

Are you aware of Burris Signature Pos-Align Offset rings? These scope rings have offset inserts that allow you to position the scope within the rings to keep the optics centered. Something to consider for long range optics. Plus the inserts help to protect the scope tube.

Another vote for Sightron scopes. Of course, I also like them because they have been supporting our gunsmithing program for years (normally with a donation for our yearly raffle). The work on the bolt is good! Looking forward to seeing this project come together.

Nice project. I just finished my 1911 and the next project is either an AR or an accurized long range .308 based on a Remmington 700.

I'm torn between going with an adjustable power or fixed. From what I understand the benchrest shooters mostly use powers up to 45 in fixed.

The barrel turns out to be a Bartlein vs. Krieger. The smith said which ever he could get first which was fine with me. Both use single-point cut rifling. Also sent the action out for adding a side bolt stop release and bolt knob. Did purchase a Jewell benchrest trigger.

Thanks Art. The action is at Kampfeld Custom in Clinton Mi. having a bolt knob attached & a side bolt stop release added. This thing is getting out of hand, (but it's going to be awesome).

i can guuuurrrantee YOU better groups/tighter groups/repetitive groups after spending all those bucks on cool stuff.....................by ditching that wood stock and going with a BEDDED MCMILLIAN F/GLASS STOCK!

check their website. get a "drop-in" fit stock(pick yer flava and color) and then either have it bedded or you bed it w/aluminum pillars. find out EXACT inch pounds of torque for your action allen screws and once bedded nevar evar take it apart unless forced to. then RETORQUE to exact specs that you have saved.


i dont care what anyone says re: wood stocks. no matter where ya live, humidity changes,wood stocks swell, and WILL AFFECT your POI.


example its june here, a hundert and fifteen degrees(115F) 0% humidity. take that same rifle anywhere that has humidity and wood stock will swell and affect accuracy.


so in other words.................anyone else on the firing line WILL SHOOT CIRCLES AROUND YOU WITH A MCMILLIAN STOCK! and thats A FACT!

LEARN the "mil-dot" reticles. take the time,make the effort, and learn your "come-ups". ie. if scope is a 1/4" MOA(minute of angle) then to go from your "zero" of 200yds to say 300yds................you would "click" your elevation knob (4) times UP,which = 1" up and hold DEAD ON "X" or kritter.


if you wanted to go to say 500yds. then from your "zero" of 200yds you would go (12) clicks up. 1/4" moa = 4 clicks which to hold dead on @ 500yds = 12 clicks up.


simple. whatevar scope ya buy, get tall target knobs with 1/4" per click markings for elevation and windage.


dont believe me? than why is the USA shooting team using MCMILLIAN F/GLASS STOCKS?


and yeah we just snagged a used USA SHOOTING TEAM M-14 f/glass stock for my younger sons M-14. bedded it, hand fit the iron sights, and did a trigger job, and this damn thing is SCAREY ACCURATE!

Thanks for the advise OJO. I'm going to stick with a laminated stock. Carl Bernosky has won his championships with a laminated stock. That's good enough for me. Besides they're purdier :D I know McMillian makes an excellent product.

I say this summer we have a Pelican internet shooting contest. All it takes is honesty.

Anyway a couple more pieces parts have arrived...

The scope has their crosshair reticle with a 3/32" dot.

Well I picked her up, (are guns gals like cars?), Thursday and put a few rounds thru it. I'm sure the groups will tighten up when the barrel is broken in. I did go with a Jewell trigger, 3 oz. pull, man is it light!! Ended up going with a Bartlein barrel. I changed my mind and went with a varmit hybrid stock that the action is pillar bedded in. She's a pleasure to shot.
Target is from 200 yards.

Thanks guys. It took quite a while but worth the wait. The group in on the target is 3" @ 200 yards. I know the spoon is more capable than that. Now whether I am or not has yet to be determine :D
Will be fun working with loads to see what works best.
