Turbos usually decrease the brake specific fuel consumption. You are getting a little too parfy in that last post and are lacking facts.

ODDJOB UNO 08-29-2012 12:33 PM

I believe that even though turbos are more fuel efficient, "they" will try to attack turbocharging since it is a waste of fuel to generate power more than what "they" believe you should have (for the sake of the environment).
Again, thanks for keeping me on track with the conversation.

Death of the V8?

Heck, I'm not so sure there won't be the death of the V6 (or other 6s).

Jim Richards 08-29-2012 01:04 PM

I would imagine turbocharging stays but the engine gets smaller.

Por_sha911 08-29-2012 01:06 PM

On a less serious note, I'm angry that I haven't gotten my flying car yet. I was at the 1963 World's Fair and they promised us we'd have flying cars. I want my flying car!

oldE 08-29-2012 01:06 PM

When I read this, I was wondering if I was in a time warp.

V8s haven't been the prime mover for most people for a couple of decades.
As was pointed out a few posts ago, the average v6 makes more power than most v8 of a few decades back..

My 4.3 L F 150 does the same work my 88 Chev with a 5 L used to do.
Aside from the sweet sound of a well tuned V8, I won't miss them.

Best
Les

But the thing is you can use a 1.0L 3 cylinder with a turbo to replace a 2.0L atmospheric 4 cylinder. You can make the same power but have more efficiency with the turbo and fewer cylinders. (This would be the new Ford EcoBoost).

Sure, people can hot rod them to make more power, but for the people who just use cars as an appliance the turbo will be more efficient.

OK, maybe they will attempt to create a maximum allowed CAES (Corporate Average Engine Size) mandate?

BTW, has anyone thought about the added cost of maintenance when no one (and possibly even no indy shops) can work on their own cars due to the advanced technology. Then there's the cost of the high tech parts...
