Revive a Fuel Pump
passing this on from someone else:
you can safely clean/ lube your fuel pump by submerging it in some diesel fuel with wires attached, running it for about 30 sec. in the normal direction using your battery, then reversing polarity at the battery and running it BACKWARDS for about 30 sec. You'll be amazed at the crap that comes out of it! It'll run better and QUIETER after that treatment. I've fixed tons of them this way. |

Diaphragm fuel pumps die from ruptured diaphragms. Rotary/vane pumps die because of motors burning out. I'm not too familiar with "crap" killing fuel pump.

I'm assuming the diesel treatment is for preventative maintenance, not bringing a dead pump back to life.

I'm about to rescue a car that's been sitting for a few 4 years, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to prevent the bad fuel residue in the tank from doing harm to the car or fuel pump Any additives that will clean it out gradually?

pull the tank and clean it is the only method I'd trust.

+1 on the above. The aggravation you save by spending a couple of hours (or much less) dropping and cleanin the tank is more than justified when comparing the parts replacement and troubleshooting fun-n-games from contaminated fuel.
