It is grossly callous of me to bust out laughing, but I did after reading that as the vision of a suitcase with a dildo taped to it going around the luggage carousel came to mind - bwahahahaaaa!!!!

My preferred airline these days:

I will say I have never met a ruder bunch of airport workers than the ones at Norfolk. Unmitigated jackasses, all of them.

It REALLY ruins commercial flying for you in the USA, if you take a flight from out of country, and go through what they do to board a plane...

That said, it does vary from airport to airport. I pretty much try to not fly from a US airport if I can help it. I'm just not into being "conditioned" for a future police state, which is what it feels like to step into a US air terminal.

How about when they get OFF the plane? We fly south most every winter for a vacation. Once and only once we flew from Toronto. We did the regular security check getting on the plane. Getting off we expected customs, but not ANOTHER security clearance! WTF? 90 minutes in line with 2 restless kids excited to see Mickey, to clear a 2nd security check in Orlando - shoes off, bags through the machine, walk through the metal detector. Then another (thankfully short) line from customs. We now always drive to Buffalo and fly from there.

My post may not have been clear, so you may have misunderstood me. I was flying out of the UK, and found the process to be much less painful than if I tried to get on a plain in the US, and I was flying to a foreign country, and was a foreigner myself...(I get a kick out of hearing US tourists refer to a local as a foreigner...)

Our system in the US, is instead of hassling just the people that look like they need hassling, to hassle everyone to make it "fair". It is a little worse if you're not a US citizen, I observed they had less workers for the non US, and more people in the line. I had no luggage, intentionally, so it made life easier when entering the US.

So you went through security once landed and back in the U.S.? I've read about this and some people successfully refused to go through it. I look forward to this on my 1st international trip when I get back from New Zealand in February!

OK, that's a funny story. (Or at least the image of a bag going 'round the carousel with a dildo taped to it.) Totally inappropriate and mean-spirited by the baggage handlers and they should be punished/fired, but funny.

A college roommate's girlfriend once told me a story how they went through customs and her bag was singled out for an open search. That was the piece of luggage being shared by herself and her mother. Security guy unzipped it and about 20 tampons rolled out. The guy was so embarrassed he just shoved them back in (as more were falling out) and waved them through. Never even fully unzipped the bag let alone searched it. Ah, the good ole days where people actually tried to not embarrass each other.

Well before the TSA Gestapo came into being when air travel was still fun, a very cute flight attendant friend confided that she packed a huge dildo on top in her bag so that Customs would not dig through her things. It worked well.
