Got paid last 6 months for not accomplishing anything, fed up with it!
6 months ago I switched roles at work to a position where I am charged with identifying business improvement opportunities within our own 4 walls and working with suppliers. I am a results orientated person who finds great pleasure in accomplishing the impossible. I thought this position was a good fit for me at the time as I go beyond the traditional "consultant" role by rolling up my sleeves doing whatever it takes to make thing happen. I am used to breaking down barriers and have been quite successful in bringing together successful cross functional teams.
In my new role I am working under a gentleman who thinks he is the perfect embodiment of a "leader". His shtick is leadership this, leadership that, but when it come time to support me during a crossroads he falls flat. I have accomplished NOTHING over the past 6 months and I am boiling over. I can not continue to collect a paycheck knowing this fact. I have a meeting scheduled with my "leader" tomorrow to devise an action plan. I also have a monthly session with the President who I will also voice my concerns. I need to feel I am adding value to the organization. Speedy ![]()

I suggest you work on the way you're phrasing your sentiment before you go in the meeting.
Unless you just want them to agree that you're "not accomplishing anything" and eliminate your position.

I think what you want to say is, "I'm ready for larger challenges."

I hope you have a folder full of documentation as to how you are being hindered. The only thing worse than a bad "leader" is a bad leader who is a great salesman since he convinced the boss that they need him. It can be a tough sale to tell the president that he made a bad choice picking your supervisor...

Telling your bosses boss that he's a shmuck is not a good idea unless you have a new job lined up or you have won the lotto.....
Go into your meetings and listen to what they say. Mind into motion before mouth into gear. If your still not happy after, start looking for a new job.

My most valuable jobs have been my worst.
Every one is a learning experience. I find sometimes there is more value in learning what not to do then there is in learning what to do. Put another way, experience is the sum of mistakes. Now ask yourself, will you be working at this place till you retire? I doubt it. For the next 20 years? Unlikely. 10, 5, 2 more years? You will leave eventually. Don't get wrapped up in the now. Learn the lessons that this job is teaching you them take them to the next stop in your career path. Don't be bitter, don't be angry, be realistic. Odds are very high that you will not affect the change that you are looking for. Instead of changing your work focus on changing where you work. Good luck. |

Uhhhh, draw the check, you have 2 Porsches and need the money. If nobodies gripping about what you do, or don't do, chill out and continue on. Trust me, you'll have enough challenges before you pass on to make some slack time now seem like the good old days.

Good luck, let us know how it goes. I wish I were better at keeping my mouth shut at work. I'm sure my frankness has stunted my chances at management, oh well.

I'm in a similar situation. Ethical conflict with the boss, got shunted to a job I could do in my sleep. BUT working with a great team and $$ is actually marginally better. Solution? I went half time and took a new job to provide the mental stimulation. The old job provides the bucks and the security with lots of time for study. When the guy I had the conflict with moves on ( he's over 60), I will be in a position to reconsider my options.

I spoke extensively with my boss about the situation. He is very much feeling the same frustrations as I am. The root cause is a new General Manager, lets call him Pete, was just hired 3 weeks ago who is now in charge of an area which is completely off track and bringing the company down. The issue is highly visible up through the organization all the way to the CEO and heads are going to roll if it isn't turned around.
Through one of my projects, code name OTD, I am working on, not directly related to the situation in Pete's area, I discovered the issue at hand and the root cause. It was definitely a WTF are we doing moment. I took my discoveries over to the line manager who was directly in charge of the process and systems who immediately blew me off and told me I was just making assumptions. This particular gentleman has always been very protective of his area and systems, and up to this point, since the only 2 people who truly understand his systems work in his department he has successfully thwarted off investigation attempts. Immediately I took my findings to the President and the brand new General Manager, Pete. While I sat there with all my documentation and story telling examples, Pete proceeded to explain to me for 15 minutes as to the cause of the situation before I even had a chance to speak. The information he was provided was very much BS which came from the protective architects of the area. I was a little put off as to why he didn't have interest in LISTENING to the results I was about to present, not to mention the constant interrupting and talking over me. I left that meeting with a sour taste in my mouth. So on Thursday I had a meeting setup with my OTD project team and Pete to discuss our options going forward and devise a strategy to overcome an obstacle in project OTD. Up until this point the team has made fairly good progress and has been very cohesive. Pete shows up to the meeting 15 minutes late, takes phone calls while people within the meeting are speaking to him and frequently talks over people, including myself. I could see the teams' WTF look every time Pete was rubbing people the wrong way. So at the end of the meeting we had a simple 3 step action plan to get over the hurdle. Everybody was getting up and heading out the door when Pete demanded we halt the project. At that point I felt my blood pressure shoot up about 50 points. He comes to the meeting late, misses the briefing of the situation, is disrespectful of everybody in the room, destroying morale along the way, allows the meeting to end with an action plan in place then pulls the plug as everybody is leaving the meeting. Come to find out he has done the same thing to my boss and many other people through the facility. What I don't think he realizes is all these people are those going above and beyond trying to drive systematic changes and he is just crapping on them. My boss and I discussed our strategy yesterday and how we need to change based on the new regime. Speedy ![]()

Pete needs to be taken out behind the woodshed. Pool your money and hire a goon.

Can you find a similiar paying job if terminated?
I left my final "corporate" job with similar frustrations. I found the management you speak of will knife you. GL John

It sounds quite a good job to me.
Be thankful, there are a lot of hungry people out there right now. |
