Potential tire failure for my truck? Pic

Saw this just now. I have a road trip coming up. Costco tire. I'll show them tomorrow. The sidewalk has a "whoop" in it. Never seen this before. I can feel the undulation with my finger easy. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/04/u5a5a8y8.jpg

Broken belt in the sidewall. Get it replaced.

Did you really say this?

Just replaced two tires on my truck due to separation. Finally got so bad that you could feel it but it was on the tread and not sidewall.

trekkor 09-03-2012 05:15 PM

I have had that on my rear dually tires.

Nothing ever happens. The tire tread eventually wears out and I replace them.

Have them inspected at the shop where you purchased them for their opinion.

If it has been there since day one, it may be an anomally that is not of concern - but have a QUALIFIED tire expert check it out. Not the the tire jockey, someone that knows their stuff.

On the other hand, if it was NOT there and is there now, that would cause me quite a bit more concern. That tire I would replace without question.

A sidewall bubble is usually caused by impact with a curb or perhaps railway track crossing. If no damage then it is a defect which is allowing air into the casing from within. Have it inspected by the supplier. Replacement is a good idea and if the damage is evident from inside it will probably be warranty.

I have those on all my Michelin tires on my dually. I wouldn't worry about it. Have them look at if you feel the need.

Grog 09-03-2012 08:54 PM

I see the problem, you have a Toyota emblem in the middle of your wheels. I would change those to Ford, Chevy (GMC) or Dodge real quick.

Is that a little bit of a joke?

Grog 09-03-2012 09:04 PM

Is that a joke? NO!! I'm serious. That Michelin wants to be on a domestic. Michelin's are top of the line tires, they want to be on top of the line trucks, they want to work, haul loads, not drive around California on a toyota.

Grog 09-03-2012 09:06 PM

This is strange, I only post here when I have had some beer. Or 2 some beers or more than that. ramble ramble. Still serious.

Cliff , do you have a "real" spare? switch it out ....

fanaudical 09-03-2012 09:54 PM

I'd get it swapped (especially if you're carrying some load). Costco has been really good about replacing tires under warranty for stuff like this (in my experience with them).

I believe that is a normal thing in a radial tire, due to the construction technique. The carcass of the tire is made up of a bunch of wide strips running from side to side and that is an overlap of bands.

Or it could be gettin' ready to blow.

i suppose there's no Michelin on that 944 of your:)? BTW, I drive a Dodge and a Toyota.

I've had a few of those over the years. If it was a bubble, I'd be concerned, but since it's, for lack of a better term, a reverse bubble, I don't think it's that big a deal. I've never had anything happen as a result.

vash 09-04-2012 10:11 AM

wife is gonna run the tire by the shop..

curious what direction they have me go..

sc_rufctr 09-04-2012 10:18 AM

^^^^ They'll probably replace it. The what if is enough of a reason.

If it's not a warrantee issue, they will definitely prescribe a new set of tires. People have boat payments to make, dude. :)

I would not worry one bit about that. I've had many tires with that defect, sidewalls are generally way stronger than they need to be. I've had an aged, dry-rotted tire blow on the highway, though.
