Texas to open fastest US highway with 85 mph limit

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas will soon open a stretch of highway with the highest speed limit in the country. The Texas Transportation Commission has approved the 85 mph speed limit for a 41-mile-long toll road near the increasingly crowded Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio. The road runs several miles east of the interstate between two of the state's largest metropolitan areas. ...

There still will be a Prius on the far left camping out.....

I thought Montana had "Reasonable and Prudent" ?

Sounds faster than 85 ;)

Shuie 09-09-2012 06:39 PM

whooohoooo!

Anyone who has ever driven across the I-10 corridor from San Antonio through West TX will sincerely appreciate this. I made the journey from Baton Rouge, LA to Bisbee, AZ two years ago to help a friend drag a '65 Dodge TownWagon Powerwagon home. It's an absolutely miserable drive West of San Antonio. Anything that shaves an hour or two off of this is a good start, IMHO.

God bless Texas. That could be easily done with a LOT of midwestern Interstates. Pretty much every one in KS is straight and flat, only moderately traveled, and with minimal exits. Even 75 feels slow.

No, they got rid of that many years ago.

This is a new road and will be designed for 85. About 30-40 miles west of San Antonio, I-10 is already 80 mph. I'm just glad they upped the limit from Houston to San Antonio to 75.

HA! :D

Yeah, if it's on any of the road in or out of Austin, you can count on it.

That's not true? Because everybody in KS lives on a farm, owns cattle, and sees tornadoes regularly.

Montanabahn is gone, but they still leave you alone up to 83-84... beyond that my luck runs out.

redstrosekNic 09-09-2012 08:06 PM

Man, I was excited when the OH Turnpike raised the limit to 70mph... Another 15mph would be nice!

krichard 09-09-2012 08:34 PM

Even the locals can't figure out what the hipsters are trying to do here!!!

Only from 1995 to 1999 then it was ramped back.

DanielDudley 09-10-2012 12:50 AM

80 seems to be the ''new'' average speed in a lot of areas out East...

that makes sense, a girl I was dating back in '96 was out there and took a picture of the sign... I wish I could find it.

scottmandue 09-10-2012 10:56 AM

Ba... ba... but how are they going to get the Texans to slow down to 85?

I have relatives there.
